Do the Chinese and Japanese hate each other so much that the Chinese would be mad over a samurai robot?

I think it's going to really vary by region and by person. If you just went by geography then the assumption would be that I don't know Asian cultures because I live in the American south. But I'm a film buff so I know a fair bit about Asia from the really great films that have come out of China, Japan, and South Korea. But there are regions of the world I don't know very well because they don't have a strong impact on film.

But in our instant communication interconnected global world it does seem like people should make more of an effort to understand the wider world. You might not know the leader of each nation in Africa but a general idea of lives of people in different parts of Africa wouldn't be a bad thing.

Well considering the fact that during the Rape of Nanking the Japanese raped over 20,000 women, children, and the elderly, as well as murdered 60,000 innocent civilians, its not entirely unbeleivable

I grew up in Georgia and now live in Alabamer, I guarantee if I go down to the Chinese Buffet and grab up some redneck they couldn't differentiate between a ninja and a samurai ha, but you know that if you grew up here too ha.

Fair enough...although isn't the Silver Samurai usually a villain? (I haven't seen his depiction in the recent movie yet.)

Also, I don't think of Godzilla or Transformers as distinctly "Japanese" in the same way that a samurai is. Giant sea monsters and automatons are pretty global phenomena.

I really don't get why the Chinese would be more interested in more Hollywood movies than the Japanese?

No, according to both studies people in pretty much every other country have a better grasp of which country is which. That has precisely **** all to do with 16th century Japanese clans.

'Master of foreign cultural knowledge'? You're making stuff up. I'm also a loss as to why I should be trying to be member of the royal family? Or perhaps you just don't know what regal means.

Cannot wait for the movie to come out just so I can get some relief, the rubbish going on on these boards in the lead up is pretty unbearable.

Here's a 2013 article from Reuters talking about anti-Japanese films made in China.

But that just indicates the kinds of movies that get made by certain Chinese production companies; it doesn't really tell me how audiences generally react to samurai on screen.

The Warcraft franchise has a race of pandas called "Pandaren". The original drawings had some of them in samurai armor, and this did in fact offend the chinese. They took down all the related artwork.

So yes, passing off samurai as "chinese" does in fact, offend the chinese.

I remember saying this when we first heard about Drift.

A German/French Bugatti, which transforms into a japanese samurai, speaking Mandarin, and an American film?

    Yeah........nope.

Some ninja were samurai, or at least became samurai, and some samurai became ninja, depending on the fates of their relative families. Hanzo Hattori (real guy, honestly) is a good example of this.

Japan and China did wage war on eachother during the feudal era, most notably during the Mongol "Yuan" dynasty, where two major japanese victories were attributed to "divine typhoons" or "Kamikaze". Japan and China were rivals for much of their respective histories as much as they've been cultural influences on eachother, and also effectively fought over Korea a number of times.

Samurai have been a longstanding symbol of japanese martial history, including during ww2 and the years immediately preceding it, a period when Japan occupied a large part of China and did some pretty awful stuff there. Also, currently, Sino-Japanese relations are... less than good.

So honestly, I wouldn't expect Samurai to play that well to a Chinese audience, assuming they care enough to equate it to Japanese militarism.

Yes, Kamikaze literally translates to "divine wind", I wanted to explain the wind in question was actually a typhoon. A divine typhoon would be "kamitaifu" since typhoon is already an anglicanization of a japanese word.

Unfortunately a Samurai armor is aesthetically more appealing than that of the Chinese.:redface2:
