So for those who don't know, back in Generation 1, be it comic or the TV series, we were introduced to the highly popular and lovable Dinobots! Here's the team:

Grimlock the leader and a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Slag second in command, has a bit of a temper and a Triceratops.
Sludge very strong, but also not so bright and a Apatosaurus.
Snarl a loner and a Stegosaurus.
Swoop only flyer, also a bombardier and a Pteranodon.

Those are the five that anyone 30 years old and over know! Over the years we have seen the Dinobots appear in multiple comics always same 5 characters, just have different stories. As for TV, we see the Dinobots make a return in December 2007 to the series Animated which featured: Grimlock, Swoop and Slag(he was actually named Snarl on the show). They didn't play a huge role in the series, but it was nice to see some Dinobots back on screen! Quick side note, if you haven't seen Animated and love Transformers, do yourself a favor and pick up the 3 season series on Blu-ray(Amazon is a good place to pick it up). In 2007 we also get Transformer's in live-action on the BIG SCREEN! I know this can be a touchy subject because some fans can't really stand Michael Bay and what he did with the Transformers, but like it or not they have become part of the Transformers continuation. Another TV series was created, Prime, which had the characters looking like a combination of live-action and Animated. There were also 2 games made by High Moon Studios, War for/Fall of Cybertorn, the character design for these games are highly regarded. They have a great mix of that Generation 1 aesthetic, but are completely Cybertonian because they have not been to Earth yet, that's were Prime somewhat pick's up in 2010, they are considered to be in the same continuity. In the second game we got the Dinobots; Grimlock, Slug(Slag), Swoop, Snarl and Sludge, they are all in the game, no Dinobots are in Prime. Quickly before I continue, there is a follow up to the show Prime which had 3 seasons and a movie Prime: Predacons Rising, it is scheduled to be released in Spring 2015 and the only details we have is: It has been years since the events of Predacons Rising. Bumblebee is summoned to Earth to battle a new generation of Decepticons and assembles a rogue team of young Autobots that includes a rebel "Bad Boy Bot," an Elite Guard cadet, a bombastic Dinobot, and a hyperactive Mini-Con. This new series has also been confirmed as Transformers: Robots in Disguise The only character revealed are Bumblebee, Sideswipe and a bot named Fixit, some speculate he is the Mini-Con, but we have No idea who the cadet or Dinobot will be!? Finally in 2014, we get a new live-action film, Age of Extinction, this is the very first time they are on the BIG SCREEN and this is the cast of Dinobots:

Grimlock a Tyrannosaurus, and leader.
Slug a Triceratops.
Strafe a two-headed Pteranodon.
Scorn a Spinosaurus.

Now as of right now we don't know much about these characters other than they are Dinobots refereed to as Legendary Warriors.

So here is a list of characters that have been mentioned and never made it to the "big stage" part of the team or shown in any comic, video-game or TV series:

Skar who was a tactical medic and accidentally killed by Grimlock and we never saw a Dino-transformation from him. IDW comics.
Paddles a Elasmosaur(dinosaur sea creature) in another version of the Generation 1 cartoon never made he would've been wave 2 of the Dinobots that were made in S.O.S. Dinobots. It'd been Grimlock & Slag wave 1, Snarl & Paddles[/B]
Slash a Velociraptor that was going to be in AOE, but was cut for unknown reasons.
Slog a Apatosaurus, who many believe is the AOE version of Sludge with a name change just like Strafe is "supposed" to be Swoop in AOE. There was also a version of Snarl, which was still a Stegosaurus, that never made it into Age of Extinction.

I have a few questions that I'd like to see people give answers to.

Question 1. Would you like to see any of the characters who never "made it" get added to a comic, video-game or TV/Movie?

Question 2. Which team do you like better, Team 1 the original 5 or Team 2 the AOE squad?

Question 3. Would you say that Strafe is Swoop and that Slog is Sludge?

Question 4. If you could make your own team of Dinobots with a limit of 5, who would you choose, what version, G1, Animated, War for/Fall of Cybertron, Prime or Age of Extinction and why?

Question 5. Do you think we should leave the Dinobots alone and keep the original team as "the" Dinobots or would you like to add more? If you'd like to add, would they be any of the characters mentioned or NEW characters?

Questions 6. Final question who do you think the Dinobot will be in the new Transformers: Robots in Disguise? All we know is the Dinobot will be bombastic, only two Dinobots that exist have had these terms used to describe them are Swoop and Scorn or will we see a completely new Dinobot?

Strafe was a "Bay-a-fied" Swoop, Hasbro put the Technobot on the Box Art for the Evo pack, named a one headed flying dino "Strafe" in the Mash ems', so I don't know.

Slog, I seriously don't understand that one, not in the film, why not just use the G1 name for the toy...

Question 4. If you could make your own team of Dinobots with a limit of 5, who would you choose, what version, G1, Animated, War for/Fall of Cybertron, Prime or Age of Extinction and why?

I have had a dream where Fall of Cybertron Grimlock and G1 Grimlock team up to whoop on some Insecticons and Shockwave. (Are you listening High Moon?)

Question 5. Do you think we should leave the Dinobots alone and keep the original team as "the" Dinobots or would you like to add more? If you'd like to add, would they be any of the characters mentioned or NEW characters?

I'm fine with anything to be honest.

To get the ball rolling I'll answer my own questions...
1. As the name would suggest I would like to see Paddles
2. Right now Team 1, but if we get to know more about Team 2 Dinobots it'd be a close call.
3. I don't think that Strafe and Swoop are the same, but I do think that Slog is Sludge.
4. Grimlock, Scorn, Slag, Snarl and Swoop. I was one that really liked the Animated style and would look like that, but definitely be Autobots and work with Prime more frequently. If you know Animated then you know the Dinobots never really helped and that's what I'd change.
5. I say yes add more but don't overload us, I don't want 100 Dinobots, then that just takes away what makes them "special and cool". Paddles could have worked in Generation 1, but I don't think he'd really fit now. So I'd only add Scorn as I think he is a great character with a great design!
6. I would like to see someone new and have them interact with other Dinobots in later episodes of the new RID, but if it were to be an existing character I'd go with Scorn!

I really enjoyed your answers and thanks for taking the time to read my post. I'd say a lot of people are thinking it's going to be Grimlock in RID, which would be fine, it'd just be nice to see another Dinobot in the spotlight for a little while.

I much prefer the g1 Dinobots given the lack of characterization they had in the movie

Any other's interested in the now ever present Dinobot debates going on? I think I summed it up pretty well and added a couple questions for some good feedback from the community...if you haven't read it and a few minutes take a look and give a couple quick answers

Question 5. I would love to see more i feel they will become there own faction apart from the autobots if they have more since there are tons of dinosaurs to choose from

Questions 6. I feel it will be Grimlock to be honest. I love Grimlock he is my favorite transformer of all time. I mean he has been very popular lately.

I love the idea of the AOE Dinobots but they dissapointed me by just being an excuse for Optimus and the Autobot to ride in to battle on Dinosaurs.

Still Haven't found my ideal Dinobots....was really hoping it would have been the movieverse versions.

 

Yeah I did feel their role in the movie wasn't nearly as big as it should've been

 

I agree with both you, I wanted something to try and know who these guys were other then big Dinobot "Legendary Warriors". Take away the fact that they are Dinobots and what do you have really, nothing. The only reason we are talking about them is because they ARE Dinobots. If they would've been just four random Legendary Warriors that weren't Dinobots then we don't even have this discussion.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if the Dinobots appear in the new RiD cartoon since they're now in the movie universe. Bumblebee and Ratchet were thrown in Animated and Prime after the 2007 movie

 

Well we're getting one, a bombastic one. So there's that.

 

Kinda wish we had a Magmatron update where all the dinos had bot modes. He had a elasmosaur type dino with a million points of articulation in his neck.

G1 Sludge needs more love. Only one I had as a kid since the others were sold out and it wasnt very often that mom would take me to the toystore, so Sludge it was.
Cool thing is I LOVED that toy. They even had cockpits for the Diaclone men. Sludge blew away the little cheapo Zoid toy I had.

 

Your right, now that at least 4 Dinobots are in this "continuation" I'm still hoping for Scorn to be in RID. I also hope that we see more then just one Dinobot throughout the series. I'd also be okay with a new Dinobot, he/she just has to be "normal"...no two-headed Dino's.

Also, now that that Dinobots are the "in" thing for 3rd party companies, is anyone else hoping that we get more then just the 5 original Dinobots?? I for one would like to see a company take a shot at making someone like Scorn or Paddles or Slash with a "new" design! I would definitely buy something like that!
