I've actually just started checking out some homebrew videos over the last week. Mostly driven by a desire to purchase a Gameboy Player for my GameCube and not pay out the ass for the disc as well.

Now that I've gone down that rabbit hole, I'm thinking of soft modding a Wii and an original Xbox. I would rather wait to see if I can find a cheap Wii since the only one I currently own was a gift from my wife and I don't want to risk damaging it in any way.

Once I actually take the plunge though, I'll definitely share!

Honestly, if you want emulators/homebrew.. I suggest an Xbox Series S, or a Steam Deck.

Yeah, people can play retro stuff on there also I think. I think most of the releases can be played on there also.

I played a few, mainly some Atari 2600 ones when I got the Retron system a few years ago. One I remember was a 2600 TOS Star Trek game featuring Red Shirts and seeing how long you keep keep them alive one at a time on a very hostile planet.

Who would have thought that an average person could make a video game when we were kids and now most of can do it. Not sure if the games would all be good but its nice to see people trying.

The big thing for me is not spending too much extra money when trying this stuff. I'm not a fan of any Xbox systems beyond the original and the Steam Deck is way outside of my spending comfort zone. Picking up a few components for systems I already own or even finding some cheap replacements for those systems is right up my alley, though.

I found an excellent Wii homebrew walkthrough and another video that confirmed how to save Gamecube ISO's, so I decided to bite the bullet and give it a try on the Wii I've owned pretty much since it launched.

There's some good and bad here. The good is that I now have a way to backup my Wii and Gamecube discs as well as play ISO's/roms. The bad is that I didn't have any memory cards that are the best size to handle all those files. They're either too small to be effective or too large for the Wii to support. Luckily, Best Buy is currently having a sale on their media cards/drives so I've got a 64GB SD card and thumb drive ready for pickup today. I've also had to uninstall and reinstall the USB Loader a couple of times, so I'm not sure how effective it's really going to be in the long run. I might just use it to save my Wii games and permanently delete the application once that's done.

All-in-all I've really enjoyed the experience and am super stoked about the doors it's opened to help me get games that would otherwise be out of my reach!

Learned pretty quickly that Wii files are freaking huge, so I bought a 256GB card yesterday. Now I've got plenty of space for the Wii and Gamecube games that I've ripped and downloaded with plenty to spare the future!

Can also use a phone as a retro hybrid console, I've got my Galaxy S21 set up that way and I can connect a controller to it and even display it on a TV.

As for Homebrew games themselves, the most recent one I've gotten is a remake of Sonic Triple Trouble done as if it were a sequel to Sonic&Knuckles and released on the Genesis.

    Sure thing, here you go
Game Jolt - Share your creations

I've not played it yet, so I don't know how good it it. Waiting to beat 2, 3 and Sonic&Knuckles before playing it, but everything I've seen of it looks good. Got it loaded up on my Steam Deck.

So when I mentioned homebrew being a rabbit hole in an earlier post, I had no idea how much I was actually going to enjoy the processes of making these things work. I mean, I'm not developing the software or anything... Just really like seeing what's out there and fitting it to my preferences and consoles.

This weekend, I decided to work on my 2DS XL and see if I can make it a one-stop-shop portable gaming system. It's much easier managing space issues with this system since the roms are so much smaller. I think I've got it just how I want at this point. I'm still finding more roms, but I've already got more than I would probably use in the rest of my lifetime.

I've backed up copies of all of my 3DS games, DS games, and have roms for 3DS, DS, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, SNES, and movie files. It's a bit over-the-top, but I'm having a blast with this thing!

Got my 3DS XL running Homebrew today. It was easier than I anticipated, but I still felt like I was defusing an explosive device.

I'm using my battered 3DS XL as a starting point before I move onto the New 2DS XL, in which I'll use the 120gb MicroSD that's doing next to nothing in my tablet (used a 4gb SD card in my battered, now-hacked 3ds)

Thats awesome. Doing that kind of stuff with no electronics experiences is always tricky.

I've done minor physical electronic repairs, I even know the basics about how to solder (I don't have a soldering iron), and I've rewritten an RFID chip before using my smartphone, but yeah, never done anything this extensive with a system's software... or firmware.

After hours of tweaking, I believe I've got my 2DS XL set up exactly how I want it. I've got a library of 3DS games. Emulators and games for DS, GB/CBC/GBA, NES, SNES, and TurboGrafix 16. I also downloaded a themes program on my laptop so that I can create custom themes.
    IMG_20230210_235945503.jpg IMG_20230211_000012760.jpg

I also discovered some tutorials to soft mod my second favorite handheld; the PSP. I've got approximately 100 games on the SD card. The software also allows me to play UMD movies directly from the SD card.

So, what program are you using to emulate SNES?

I've tried using Twilight Menu's inbuilt SNES Emulator, but it doesn't seem to work.
