That my friend is a very good question. I've noticed that Bumblebee has many scratched in bot mode and a flawless paint job in alt. mode in the first movie on numerous occasions :thumbs2:  very good question indeed

They have a self-regenerating molecular armor, stated during the scene when they were examining Scorponoks tail on the plane. The "car parts" are all made of that molecular armor, theyre real "skin" so to speak, their true body, is under that.

Its suggested from the army team examining Scorpinocks(sp?) tail that it was already starting to repair itself.

Kinda suggests they can self-repair to a degree.

Considered how BB flash-converts into the new Camaro, it's just regeneration magic.

But they look better on film when they're shiny, anyways :)

Considering that they change their cybertronian colors to match the vehicle in first place I won't be surprised if they could re-activated the electronic paintjob to go in disguise.

My theory is that the surface "skin" is full of microscopic photoreceptors, like a digital octopus. Areas that takes damages stop working correctly, hence the scratches visible in Bot mode, invisible and pristine in Alt mode, as all power would be used to make the disguise more effective, used less in bot mode.

The robots have battle damage in robot mode because it apparently makes them look more realistic.

my theory is that the car manufacturers don't want their fancy new models that they are promoting via the film to be shown scratched and beaten up.

Blame the car company. They always want their cars shinny in the movie.

Hey, now! I'm trying to suspend my disbelief here. There ARE giant, sentient Robots involved.

This is the best possible explanation.

If you could see lines on the alt. modes - where edges have been scratched in bot mode - it would have made them look more like the toys - probably would look less impressive when they transform.

well your really getting into the biology of transformers (or is that mechology?)

I'd like to think that transformers have a level of self repair like how if we get scratched we can just leave it and it will heal up just fine. However more complex parts need to be repaired by hand like BB voice box or like how us humans need surgery

i think there paint job regenerates and the paint job is just like pigment in there skin

as for the battle scarred robot perfect car debate i agree that the car companys just want to make there cars look good

    Okay.

The Autobot Overlords, the Gee-emcons, demand that every Autobot has a flawless alt mode. To ensure this, they throw tons of money in the direction of Transformers.

    Sound good?
