I just see myself taking the back holders and plate off, removing the front orange ring and teeth. Mask the blue corners and spray the plate orange and reassemble. It can't be that hard to take it apart to bare pieces. I don't care too much about the gear colors...those can stay blue if they look like they won't hold up painted, I'll just mask those too.

This will give you a complete orange front and I'll probably paint the chompers inside too.

If I have no intention of selling this and if I die, it won't be my problem.

They're currently going for over $1000. So...no, I don't think a custom job will go for nearly that.

The market is going to be incredibly limited. Of the 10k or so Unicron, how many care enough to manually disassemble the thing and try to install custom parts?

It's like those Botcon custom class figures. The money is in an untouched kit because nobody wants to spend that kind of money for some randos attempt at painting a figure.

 

I rather do that than painting it. Either way, it will be interesting if Hasbro will address this.

Here, here. I prefer unmodified toys, even if the original toy is flawed. To me, that gives it character.
