Because houses in this area (SF Bay Area) start at 1 million dollars? I don't happen to have 200,000 laying around for a down payment...

I have about a 45 minute commute each way (BART train + walking from Oakland where I live to Downtown San Francisco, where I work) -- I am not able (medically, temperamentally) to do a longer commute than that. Even then, I would have to live closer to 2 hours from work to find a decent place to own for less than 1 million dollars.

You're not lying. It's why I live in the valley. The daily commute to the bay area sucks ass, but my solace is that I own property for a fraction of what people close to the bay fork over. I used to rent in Fremont, and got tired of seeing the Landlord take extravagant vacations and lease luxury cars on my dime... Then, she would raise the rent every six months and tell me, "You're still paying well below the market rate for this area." NOPE. I decided to invest in myself and purchase a home, which was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

To somewhat stay on topic, I like Unicron and can't wait to get my hands on him.

I see you still not have discovered MultiQuote. Or the bloody EDIT button? I see now why you have as many posts as I have, despite joining a decade after I did, given how you keep spamming the topics instead of editing your posts together...

My wife and I are in the Seattle area, and its getting that bad here as well. We got lucky and purchased our house almost 9 years ago so our mortgage isn't too bad. And I'm an IT director, so I can soak the cost of living for the most part.

We're starting to hit thread slide however, we better pop it back on topic.

I live in the sticks. Its slower paced here and if u see a murder its bc a deer ran out in front of a pick-up. We dont make as much but cost of living is cheaper too. $4300 would get u a year in a nice trailer park;)

Personally, my advice is to avoid California altogether and not settle in cities.

The housing situation in the Bay Area is so broken that you basically need to be in the 1% to afford a 2 bedroom, middle class house.

The weather is amazing, but that's it. Everything is offensively overpriced and sales tax is close to 10%. Hell, the cheapest gas right now is $3.85, and that's IF you go to Costco and wait in a 20 minute line, otherwise you're probably paying over $4 per gallon.

Or live in Pittsburgh! Cost of living in the city center/east end is creeping up, but apart from that there are plenty of inexpensive non-terrifying neighborhoods to choose from. A $580 monthly mortgage payment keeps a lot of financial doors open.

While I live in the LA area (which is still one of the higher cost-of-living places in the country), the cost-of-living where I live is an order of magnitude less than San Francisco (about half, I'd say... I'm not in LA proper, but even LA proper is cheaper than San Francisco).

And other parts of California are even better.

That's not to say everyone should come out here, but we're not all the same.

I paid $626 due to the combined city and state tax of 8.875%. Would have been happy paying my old VA tax rate, but I moved out last year.

Hm, I wonder what property and sales taxes would be for people owning and living on the surface of Unicron. LOL.

So Unicron is still in my cart in one of my computers on Hasbro pulse. Does that mean I can buy a second one. So, far I have only clicked to the payment screen, but no errors have popped up.
