I feel like I’m learning so much about something I never spared a second thought to.

This whole crypto mining system feels like something that would’ve been invented in the 80’s. It’s like burning vast amounts of money just to artificially inflate the value of what’s left, but not enough to compensate for what was lost.

:lolol  :lolol  The 'late stage capitalism' thing is basically a meme / buzzword at this point, in-case you missed it. You think capitalism is bad? Move to China or Venezuela for a few years and tell me how fun and better it is over there, I can promise you by the end you'll be begging to come back. NFT's are stupid for sure but react negatively within reason.

People using this news as an excuse to rant about muh captialism and the environment frankly shouldn't be involved in this discussion whatsoever. There's a lot of nuance and complexity that will fly over their heads.

I heard it was closer to the electricity used by an EU citizen in one day. That could be for generating the NFT in the first place, though.

What makes NFTs so different? All these things consume massive amounts of electricity. NFTs are entertainment for the people buying them. From an objective standpoint they are all frivolous uses of electricity- regardless of what that entertainment is, it's still just entertainment.

The issue here is not that people disagree with NFTs, that's fine- it's that they're making it out as though their belief is based on pure fact rather than fact with a bit of their own opinion. NFTs are just as wasteful as the rest of electronic entertainment. I have no problem if you think it's less important than other forms of entertainment, but don't make it out as though that opinion is fact.

Best part is, the vast majority of crypto mining occurs in China, many many times the amount that occurs in the western world.

Thats all that happens online nowadays, people my age bitch about capitalism then buy products in droves and set up art commission accounts on twitter.

Ah, yes, because buying things that people are putting effort towards means you cannot criticise the endless wolfing down of the Earth done by those just shoving as much money as possible into their wallets, more than they or any person could concievably use. These are clearly similar situations and not people criticising the excesses of a system

(that's sarcasm, if you couldn't tell, as that 'argument' isn't worth even getting into shredding)

NFTs (And Crypto by extension) is a pyramid scheme. It survives by people buying into it. If someone say "I will sell you this NFT of widepeepoHappy for $20k", you just go "yeah right mate, I'll give you this bit of pocket lint to take it off your hands if you give me a dollar as well". Congratulations, you've shown that these things are as useless as they are.

More people refuse to give these things any sort of value and just laugh in the face of companies doing things with them, the sooner they'll die. There's a reason their market crashed last week, and may it never recover

Under socialism or communism, which is what many of these people believe in, neither their consumerism nor their career would be possible, nevermind actually legal.
Strange, that sounds exactly like an antique auction... or an art auction. Or any kind of exchange in which the public is given the opportunity to value the item for sale, and bid according to their own opinion.

Yeah, that's my main gripe with crypto and its tokens.
I like the main idea behind it, a currency that can't be devalued by a government and acts as a high tech alternative for international transactions.

For it to function it needs a way of governing itself to prevent it becoming worthless and it needs a way of giving those who hoast the system an incentive to pay for the hardware and electricity to hoast it so it functions.
It's just that the current model has its horrifying shadow side.

I am also not entirely against NFTs. They're a cool idea for indi comic creators. Who can set up linited nfts for their issues, and sell them. Plus earn a little percentage everytime that copy changes hands. It's just unfortunate that it comes at such a high cost.

I do hope that a new much better solution shows up soon. As I said, crypto is cool and I like it, but the cost is just to high for my taste.

I think a lot of people would trade consumerism for healthcare and housing. Consumerism is just hard to avoid because it's what the society we exist in is built to do. Their career? What career? Drawing?! How many people do you think can actually live on that?! They try that because they have to do things like make rent, pay for surgery or eat. Do you think being an artist is a life of indolent luxury? People doing art very definitively exist under every economic system anyway so your claims make no sense.

Because people could leech electricity through corruption, something that the Chinese government isn't super keen on as a general rule of thumb. Cryptomining being wasteful is also something that's running afoul of enviromental goals so it's always possible we're going to see action on it. China isn't subject to only one, total, force but in fact to multiple interests and influences.

While moving to Venezuela or China really doesn’t have anything to do with hating capitalism or anything, I have friends that have moved to both places and love it. It really just depends on what types of things you enjoy in life.

There are writers and artists for comics who post on this site that could tell you that it's a fun career but hardly a life of luxury.

NFT’s are nothing more than a waste of $ for a non tangible asset. Look no further than the sports card market (2021 Topps) and see how people have literally spent $81,000 on a single NFT of a digital card of Mike Trout.

It’s your choice on how to spend your $, but I caution people to stay as far away from this as possible.

After work Ima gunna drive to the mall, grab a Starbucks and go home to stream Wandavision while buying a toy from Amazon from my iPhone and post to Twitter, Facebook, and make a YouTube videos about how money is evil and NFT’s are destroying the world.

Because while the internet is bad, NFT’s are worse.

In the meantime we need to focus on getting more computers into the hands of the poor to get them online and connected to the rest of the world.

    Now I'm REALLY depressed.

All of this mental gymnastics just in order to sell more shit to people that they don't need...

I have lost all faith in humanity.

I never thought Id see the day where go-green fanatics would see the internet as a threat, let alone some stupid moving picture that you save on a disk or hard drive. I was under the impression anything "electric" was good. You cant please these people. If you give them windmills and dumb little electric cars, now they are coming for the internet. I could care less about anything crypto, but I dont think owning an NFT is contributing to climate change any more than "liking" an AOC tweet on twitter.

    I’m in agreement.

It’s like everyone flying to Fiji on their private jets to eat caviar and discuss how distribution of wealth will help fight climate change.

I guess the line is drawn differently for some people.

We should just go back to using nuclear...

You're accusing people of hypocrisy because they're unhappy about existing in a society where everything has a disproportionate environmental impact. If they moved out of a polluted city into a hole in the forest the city is still going to be there. What should they do in order to adhere to your standards, then? Join a commune out in the country where they grow their own vegetables and never interact with anyone else? They'd certainly be morally pure and completely ignorable, then. Become activists? But then they'd just be annoying. Take up arms and fight for the life of the planet? That would make them dangerous maniacs.

In a society that prioritised environmental stability we likely wouldn't have as many cheap plastic or electronic gadgets. Indeed, we in the first world would have to give up some things. But what, do you have a divine right to Overwatch 2 and combs that lose their teeth after a month?
