I've noticed with plenty of toys like Masterpiece Optimus whom when they come here,Hasbro replaces the chrome with painted plastic (this applies to the 20th anniversary DVD edition of Optimus) and with the Toys 'R' Us exclusive Masterpiece Rodimus Prime,Hasbro still replaces some of the chrome.Does anyone know why?
Plus the durablity side. Chrome =/= good for play. It flakes, scratches and becomes ugly quickly. Hasbro deals mostly with the toy aspect, so it's rare to see chrome.
*coughs* mostly Kenner toys *coughs* ...seriously though, those might've looked snazzy (I love em), but many of their plating didn't last. Like, even my Cheetor is starting to flake now, be it only in places that rub during transformation, and he's not even one of the usual offenders like Rattrap & Rampage. I'm actually surprised that Optimus' blue chest doesn't have a horrible history, given how much of it is spread out without being broken up.
I'm surprised we've actually seen a few Hasbro figures pop up with chrome applied (Perceptor, that mail exclusive Recon Ravage, either Generations Dirge or Thrust had a chrome inner cockpit thing). It's nice to see them use it occasionally within the past year, but I understand why they don't do it more often as explained by the above posts.
TM2 Prowl is a God-awful nightmare! I dropped him on the table as I was transforming him the first time. No more than 6 inches and it dented the chrome blue (or red, I can't remember) of his wings. 3 months later I only have 10% of the color and 90% bald white plastic =\
The last time I can recall there being any kind of chrome was on the Recon Ravage repaint (the mail-away from the NEST promotional subline) and the cockpit innards of Generations Thrust (which can not be touched normally). Other than that, I honestly prefer there to be no chrome on my toys. I'm amazed the chrome on my Sixshot (which has clearly seen a lot of play, if the amount of dirt on it, yellowing, and sticker wear were any indication) is still mostly intact with only one dent on the left wing's chrome to speak of, especially since that part is meant to contact the floor in spaceship mode (that's where the rollers are located).
Well, but I mean in terms of taking enough to actually harm people who don't already have leprosy or whatever. Also, should we really be referring to this stuff as chrome? I mean, isn't most of it just shiny plastic? I mean, if it was actual chromed aluminum, it wouldn't likely rub or crack off. It might develop some pitting, but that'd likely happen if you kept them outside.
