I can't imagine this to be true. News story is from July of this year, 4 months ago, and since then, I haven't seen or heard anything which adds fuel to this unsubstantiated rumor. Anyhow, I can't see Hasbro profiting from buying Takara Tomy, who still really only mainly cater to the Japanese market (despite buying RC2). And it's not just Takara Tomy feeling the downturn: it's practically all Japanese toy producers, as the article also states. No gain for Hasbro means no deal, I'm sure.

Yeah; I don't see why Hasbro would purchase TakaraTomy unless they HAD to.

They aren't really competing with Hasbro and the HasTak partnership works out pretty well given both companies shoulder costs.

Odd that this story didn't turn up here at the time it was posted.

From my sources, TT was in the red and desperate AF, but after jedi-mind tricking the fandom into embracing toys at a quarter grand a pop, all is well ... :)

Now fans will be satisfied that they won't be forced into buying expensive toys because they will never be made.

    ...selfish pricks.

I'm still waiting for Takara Tomy to buy Fanstoys, sending anti-3rd party and anti-TT zealots alike into uncontrollable fits of rage and self-doubt!

This doesn't bode well for the future of Takara releases as we know them.

When one toy company buys another, it's usually only the intellectual property that they essentially buy. See Hasbro's purchase of Kenner for a model of what might happen.

I can't see Hasbro operating Takara Tomy w/TT's current business model especially w/nose diving sales and mounting losses the last several years in the Japanese market.

The days of receiving both Takara and Hasbro releases of figures may be over if these rumors are true. Which is sad. As collectors, we've had it good being able to pick and choose between Hasbro and Takara Tomy releases.

Which I could see happening. If Hasbro is licensing the Transformers brand from Takara Tomy and TT is in danger of either folding or selling to one of Hasbro's competitors like Mattel, Hasbro likely would have no choice but to buy Takara Tomy or possibly lose one of their best brands.

I would assume the stuff marketed toward adults is fine, but that dwindling birth population had to come into play somewhere and Takara Tomy makes alot of stuff for kids.

Takara licenses Transformers from Hasbro, not the other way around, but otherwise this was my thought. Hasbro may not want to buy Takara, but they absolutely don't want a competitor to buy them either. Without Takara engineers to design the toys I shudder to think where Transformers could end up.

Nope: Hasbro still licenses Transformers from TakaraTomy, just as TyrantGalvatron already mentioned. See the TakaraTomy TFwiki here.

I didn't see anything there that suggests Takara owns Transformers (which makes sense, as they don't). Hasbro owns Transformers, they license it TO Takara for Takara to sell in Japan.
