a day early but yeah. everybody, give your dad a hug. and for members who are dads, you know the drill. i got my dad a gift. can't wait to give it to him.
My wife got me the Black and Decker Matrix drill. You can swap out the drill head for an impact driver, jigsaw, router, sander, saw. Its f*cking awesome!
My wife and kids were going to go out with me for dinner last night for Father's Day - to Buffalo's Wild Wings (sports bar - 20+ kinds of wings). Today, I'm going to a local comiccon and having a three-generation surf+turf Father's Day barbeque in the evening. Unfortunately, the dinner at Wild Wings wound up being my wife, myself, and my youngest daughter. My oldest was invited to a sleepover when she went to a birthday party earlier in the day. As much as I wanted her to go with us, as planned, I couldn't resist letting her go and socialize. She's 2+ years above grade level in her reading and math assessments - absolutely brilliant for her age (in second grade yet reading + writing at a high fourth). However, she is not very athletic and on the shy and quiet side. She has friends and isn't quite a "nerd," but she has all of the characteristics of one. So anytime she wants to do something involving socializing or sports - it's pretty much an automatic yes. We work with her on homework every evening, buy her review books to perform additional work at home and continue advancing, etc... It isn't that I'm favoring "popularity" over intellectual development. I just want to see her grow up to be well-rounded as an individual. When I was in high school, I was a bodybuilder. Every other aspect of my personality was that of a "nerd" or "geek." Having that athletic side brought just enough popularity and friends to avoid the issues associated with those labels. That's what I want for her.
My wife finds the best gifts. She had someone make me a custom Hulk bust as a Father's Day / Birthday gift. Last year was an autographed photo of Lou Ferigno as the Hulk, and the year before was Hulk seat covers for my SUV.
Surprise! My wife and daughters brought me to the Albany Comic Con and out for frozen yogurt (Sweet Frog). Picked up a replica of Kenway's hidden blade from Assassin's Creed 4, a small bust of the Hulk from World War Hulk (metal armor), a copy of Elektra's first appearance in Daredevil, and Movie 2007 Blackout - a TF I sold back in the day and regret getting rid of. Blackout is one of those few standout characters from a continuity that get honorary classics status with the broader collection of toys (after I ditched movie, animated, and AEC figures)
I was planning on taking my Dad out to eat today, my treat, but my older brother called and he came over to also do something for my Dad, so rather than have me pay for all three of us, my Dad paid for our meals this time around and then I'll pay the next time we go out. I will hold him to it as we didn't really do much for Father's Day last year given he was going thru a lot of treatments and procedures for his multiple melanoma. He even had to be in the hospital for part of his treatment for almost a whole month. My Father's Day gift to him last year was a Game Boy Advance SP with the classic Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda for the time he was in the hospital. My cousins even got him a Kindle Fire that he still uses a lot. It also didn't help that the year before that my Mom was being treated for cancer that sadly did not work out and she was in a hospice care facility for almost five months before finally passing on. So...not a fun past couple of years.
Celebrated father's day without my estranged father. It's ok, my grandfather on my mom's side is more of a father figure to me anyways. We got a DQ Blizzard cakes, goddamn do I love those.
Happy Father's Day all. I had a great one, started out the day with some yard work, wife bitching at me for doing work (she doesn't understand I enjoy it), then spent the day at the beach getting hammered, finished by bbqing some ribs and corn for the family. Wife got me a hammock for me to chill in. Great Father's Day. Hope all the dads out there had a good day too.
My Dad passed away 17 years ago (in October). I worked all day but called my Mom's fiance on my break. He's been really good to my brother and I.
