exactly what we have come to expect from you Draven total crap. Actually I love it, and Grimlock is one of my least favorite characters ever, but this looks great.
Damn! WOW! man, that's amazing! I am in total shock. You've tweaked him alot from the original toy mode but somehow all the adjustments you've done are really nice. The slimmed down torso. Definately makes a T-rex look quicker and more agile than the tail dragger from the G1 cartoon. Gives grimlock a slimmer upper chest which I really like. Textures are adding lots of depth. More metallic reflections in bot mode maybe? The dark shadows and jaw pistons in the mouth are sick. The claws have a nice arc. He looks determined to deck someone. wait .. I want to see the feet and the tail area. please! Blow this one up! -amitabah
Question: Did you rendder any of the grimlock 'behind' area? What usually makes or breaks a Dinobot drawing/image is how the artist handles the tail stuff. Did you (or were you going to int he future) going to render static tail or bendy tail? I love the dino-mode!
Thanks guys To answer a few questions/points: -I never liked the way that the cartoon portrayed this terrifying, seasoned warrior, with all his experience and ability, as a lumbering moron. -The claws are fully articulated. -The more something gets battered, the less shiny it becomes; I didn't want Grimlock to look like he'd just stepped off the production line. He won't be getting any shinier or reflective than he is at the moment, for that reason. -The lower legs and tail aren't built yet; at the moment the model stops at the knees. I am planning on making the tail a series of articulated sections, so I can bend it. -I'll post a pic of his back up later.
the transformered grimlock looks bit more lik the action master version still kool though, but i love the dino mode
See, now this is the sort of work I have been hoping to see from Draven. Extremely efficient, effective use of detailing. Just the right amount, no need to add, nor take away. Also, he did not make the mistake SO many make, which is trying to make Grimlock's head complicated. It's really not. IN fact, I love how close to the toy he made the head look. Spot on. As for the textures, I get exactly what he's saying about the scuffs on metal and whatnot. However, I would suggest adding a bit more specularity to the un-scuffed sections to help make the scuffed sections stand out. Also, it appears that you're treating the gold and red as painted metal (since the scuff marks are grey) If so, they should have a notably different texture to them anyways. Maybe have a crackle texture to make the paint look like it's peeling off? If you meant for the gold and red to be colored metal, then I suggest adding just a bit of color to the scuff marks. As for the lighting and rendering, excellent use of lights to set the mood. The robot mode has no loss of details due to the lighting, so it's a very effective setup. However, the dinomode loses much. Of course, since those details are allready seen in the prior pic, no biggie for WIPs (so, in summary, I'm sayin "don't change it") However, you overdid the blooming on his head. Kinda hurts the eyes to look at. IMO this is one of your better works, in fact, better than your megatron. Also, some technical issues to keep in mind. You might have to make the segment of his hand where his claws come out as a seperate layer, and construct them so that they can rotate about and work like ankles so he doesn't get that floating on one edge of his feet look that he currently has. Had you planned on going about it a different way?
Really nice work there, Draven. The lighting and texture work on Grimlock are just phenomenal, sometimes I wonder what your stuff would look composited next to real life. The Dino mode looks great too, though that mouth looks like it's opening wider then is should, though a side shot might better give way as to how the dino mouth was built. (looks like where the lower jaw rotates, the actual pivot needs to be moved up, but it could just be the perspective). Not sure if the eyes should be narrower, almost like how DON draws the tRex mode eyes (though this is more my own aesthetic preference as opposed to anything actually being wrong with the model). PS. I *think* that I'm starting to get the hang of procedural texturing. I've definitely got to play around with it some more as well as finish building the model, but will try and get some pictures posted up in a few days.
