    The article clearly states the fire-breathing Grimlock was just for a commercial.

    It's actually quite well-informed, but I don't recall Battle Convoy having a sword, but I could just not know of it.

    The article implies that the Diaclone toys that would later become Transformers were available in Japan in 1980. That was the year when the Diaclone line itself was launched, but the first Car Robot toy, Sunstreaker's Diaclone predecessor, was released in 1982.
