Now that I have some time on my hands I decided to organize my trades. I was shocked to find I have a bunch of Blackest Night trades. I don't remember buying them... I vaguely remember this event and read through the wiki.... I can't see any reason this would appeal to me.... I was big into GL Corps at the time, because I thought Guy was entertaining and enjoyed his comics, but I have all the GLC books. Did I need Blackest Night to complete this series? Or did something seriously happen during in this event? I remember everyone getting a ring and fighting and that was pretty epic. But, anything else epic happen during this event?
Get the 10th anniversary omnibus. It collects the entire event in chronological order. IMO, the best company wide event of the 2000s. Very tightly written and well organized. Also really cool that the entire event takes place over the course of literally one night, something that unfortunately did not translate well over 9 months. Most important thing though was that it brought Aquaman, Martain Manhunter, and several other important DCU characters back from the dead at the end.
I wouldn't come it to CW other than some heroes fought resurrected black lanterns characters. The fights between characters were very personalized and generally not random. For instance Black Lantern Captain Boomerang attacks his son and not the Flash. Black Lantern Aquaman goes after Mera and Temptest. Everything really had a purpose and none of the extra crossover issues were the usual fluff. Definitely intense though. It felt like a true cosmic level event. Even more so than the Crisis sequels DC published in that decade. Edit: I will say that if you read all of the John's run and GLC books before the event, that you'll have an even greater appreciation of it. Definitely one of the top 5 runs of the 2000s and the definitive run of Green Lantern.
This was the event that introduced me to the Green Lantern mythos, and also introduced the Emotional Spectrum and the different color corps.
It was the event that culminated the emotional spectrum aspect. IRCC end of Sinestro Corps War kicked off all the different corps storyline. And yeah, was the last major event, if you discount Brightest Day, before Flashpoint. Really was a shame too as Johns really set up big things for the entire DC universe and then nu52 happened with a Flash miniseries. A Brightest Day total omnibus would be badass to compliment the BN omnibus. It would have to be multiple vols though.
Upcoming Box Set, too http://prhinternationalsales.com/book/?isbn=9781779507075 I thought the event was ok. MY stopping point for DC since everything after that went over my head.
The only things I really remember about Blackest Night are that it started with Atom murdering Hawkman, and me thinking, "I am so sick of this kind of comics," and that this was where I finally tapped out on Green Lantern.
