short for soap opera just in case you were wondering. Soaps are a big deal in Britain they are ratings winners and we even have a televised soap awards. For me they are a bit of a guilty and sometimes addictive pleasure and I'm really intrigued on what your opinions are? P.S. we can make this thread international soap thread if you really want to I wouldn't mind being educated by soaps from the wrest of the world
I've never understood the appeal of soaps, my mum used to watch Eastenders; I swear every episode involved 2 women just having a cat-fight in the Victoria pub.
Good, soaps? In the same sentence? What? What? I like some Sit-coms produced here, I'd like a thread with that concept.
Neighbours has a far bigger following here in the UK than Australia, so I think we've adopted it. I used to love it a few years ago, but after going to uni and not having a TV for 3 years I really just fell out of the habit of watching it.
Neighbours had turned into Logan's Run last time I saw it, everyone over 30 disappears aside from crazy old Lou hanging around outside the street.
I don't watch soaps, of any kind, but I bet your Brit Soaps are better than our American Garbage. Seeing how Sherlock and Luthor is the best TV I've seen in ages and all the best movie actors happen to be British.
I do like some of the characters in Eastenders and Coronation Street, not many of them but enough to keep me watching. The main thing that annoys me about them and Neighbours though are the really bad stories, such as swapping a dead baby for a living one (Eastenders), a cafe doing ethnic-themed nights in a business war with a fancy restaurant down the road (Corrie) and pretending that you're in a relationship with a female friend because she's pregnant and the father was an old flame of one of her friends and if that friend ever found out it would destroy their friendship so you have to do it!! (Neighbours) I don't watch the others, so no comment on those. Something I always find funny about soaps though are when actors leave so they can pursue other projects and it blows up in their faces.
My mother is a huge soaps fan. Personally I've never gotten the appeal. All they seem to consist of is people being dicks to each other in various ways. Life is depressing enough without wanting to tune into shows everyday to see other people arguing and getting beaten up, kidnapped, raped, killed, cheated on, being in debt, and generally living extremely miserable lives. You'd think those people would just move out of those places considering the death rates they have: "So this is the house for sale, yes? And how many people died horribly in this street last year? That many? Really? I'll take it!"
Bring back Brookside, that show was excellent toward the end of it's run - Channel 4 moved it to a late-night slot, the writing was clearly on the wall so the writers figured they didn't have anything to lose, and the show went completely nuts (in a good way). As for all other soaps, I'd sooner smear Tobasco sauce on my eyes than watch any of them, I'd find it marginally less painful.
Then again, Spoiler a small Liverpudlian community coming together to lynch a man is a truly bad-ass way to end a TV show.
I went with eastenders even though Corrie is probably the more consistent show just for Janine Butcher I have had a serious crush on her for years and she is probably (in my opinion) one of the coolest characters in fiction, not every storyline involving her is perfect and she last went out of it on a weak one but she remains a great evil monster, if you want to know her personality its like a cross between airachnid and blackarachnia leaning closer to airachnid.
