Grave of the Fireflies isn't a Miyazaki film.

Ehh, I think Grave of the Fireflies is a terrible movie (and I know I'm very, very alone on that), but I love the animation quality of most anything handled by Studio Ghibli.
Thematically though, I think the movie could be decently adapted into live-action.

You're NOT alone. I bought it after all the rave reviews, watched it once and felt nothing.

And stricly from a storytelling (not the "only trying to make you cry") perspective thought it was vastly over-rated. *kanyeshrug*

I'll never watch Grave of the Fireflies ever. I'd be too depressed afterwards if i ever see it.

What...I don't...WHY?! The story is told perfectly as an anime. There's no need to make it live action. D:

    Feels bad, man....

Made by DRESDEN PICTURES. Well, at least we can wager they won't be pulling any punches. Unless they change the focus to England in the Blitz, as theorized in the article. In which case, they can fuck right off.

But man... man. If they can pull this off, they'll have audiences weeping like a 5 year old with a skinned knee.

I always meant to watch the anime, but never got around to it. I better make the effort before the live-action version comes out.

In terms of animated films that truly make you feel guilt ridden by the end for me would happen to be this movie, music in general only makes this movie at times kinda heart wrenching. As for live action unfortunately just recently I would put Cannibal Holocaust on the top of the list. Whether you see it as a social commentary on society and despite how civilized we are, we're still capable of demonstrating at times just how messed we truly are at times, or you could call it a vile, inhuman, brutal, savage, gut wrenching piece of film making that could only be pulled off by a sadistic film crew. Or better yet you can watch the Cinema Snob's review of it, its perfectly up to you. Btw the theme intro, is just such sheer beautiful irony.

I saw the animated movie and it's certainly not something you'd watch if you felt like having your spirits lifted. I can see why someone would want to do a live-action version though.

Indeed. And then probably win a shit-load of Oscars because they like that kind of thing.

They should let Michael Bay direct it.

I watched the anime in film class, and I can't imagine this in live action. It'd be really rough to watch, and I don't know if any actor could really do the anime characters justice.

    I've only seen it twice.
The second time was just Bennett the Sage's review of it.

    I'm not watching it again.

Have fun. To this day, it remains one of the (if not THE) most excruciating films I've ever had the displeasure of seeing.

That must have been brutal. I don't want to be forced to watch it and be depressed as part of my education.

I'm thinking it's not going to be one of those movies you go back to the cinema to watch a second time. Not that I imagine many people reading reviews of it would think 'Hey, I'd like to go see that' especially in this day and age when life is depressing enough as it is without voluntarily adding to it.
I suppose I might give it a curiosity watch.

Of course it wasn't Miyazaki, it was directed by his fellow Ghibli Co-creator, Isao Takahata, who before Pom Poko, this movie, Only Yesterday & My Neighbours The Yamadas, also directed anime shows like the anime adap to Anne of Green Gables,
Heidi of The Alps, A Dog of Flanders & other Classic Literature adaptations for Nippon Animation & some of Toei's programmes.

But still, Another adaptation attempt on this anime?

Wasn't there already a Live Action TV mini series already made in Japan?
