Or just pick up a Pro Action Reply Plus and you can play all the import games you want without having to do the swap trick or alter the guts of your system. Plus you get the extra 4 megs of RAM to play awesome games like Street Fighter vs. X-Men (Arcade perfect port). If you're into old school shooters (shoot 'em ups), you've got a great JPN library to choose from. Some of my favs are Layer Section, Donpachi, any of the Darius games.
I picked up an Action Replay 4-in-1 for $3 already so improts are no problem. Backups though... All I could find for modchip sales were chips for round button(21-pin ribbon cable) consoles, not oval(20-pin ribbon cable).
Castlevania SOTN should be avoided. Yes, it's got a new (badly designed) area that the PS1 version doesnt have, and Maria as a playable character, but the port is just terrible, not to mention a pain in the ass to play with that thing the saturn controller calls a d-pad.
I used to own a Nomad. I got sick of it. I'm not insane about handhelds anyway, and the fact that about 99% of Nomad battery packs out there are dead due to battery failure makes them less desirable. Yeah, you can get a AA battery holder pack but the thing will drain 6 AAs real fast.
I used to have a Saturn, but hurricane Rita took it away from me Now all I have left are a few crappy games (House of the Dead and a few others), and X-Men vs. Street Fighter without the 4 meg cartridge. I used to love customizing Fire Pro wrestlers and playing Vampire Savior on that thing. I also lost my N64 due to that bitch.
Actually, I wouldn't be caught without the chip AND the PAR. The chip will run backups, but not imports or backups of imports. PAR is the opposite way, imports but no backups. I'm not a big advocate of piracy, but I'm even less of a fan of paying a bazillion dollars on e-Bay for a used copy of Radiant Silvergun... especially when Sega and Treasure wouldn't see a penny of it anyway.
I'd give Treasure half of my Paycheck for 3 months if it meant that the would create a new 2 player Gun Star Heroes for PS3 or 360, but 2D all the way. edit (for more praise) Treasure pushed the Genesis like no other. I love GSH!!!
Saturn was one of my favorite systems. Dreamcast, I thought, had nothing on the Saturn in terms of games you couldn't get anywhere else. Here are some of my pics: Dragonforce- probably the best game on the Saturn Astal- Amazing art and music. Guardian Heroes- great co-op, really fun. Castlevania SotN- Here's the thing- anything that was in the PS version is worse, but you get a couple new areas (poorly designed, but still has some new art), a few great remixes of Casltevania music, and a run ability not in the PS version. Plus, I'm a pretty big diehard fan of anything Castlevania. Sonic Jam- I think this is actually better then any sonic compilations on any current system (besides not having Sonic CD). It made it easy to connect the games to Sonic and Knuckle, featured plenty of extras, and had a 3d environment to run around in that showed the Saturn could have pulled off a decent 3D sonic game. Virtua Fighter 2- Still amazed the Saturn pulled that off so well. Panzer Dragoon- they are ALL good, but the first had an amazing soundtrack, so I lean towards that since it made it the most memorable. Nights- Just a really nice feel and atmosphere to it, especially if you can find Christmas Nights.
I need to get a Saturn again Better than Arcade Port actually (I've been in the Arcade business for 19 years this summer so I would know)
Got a cheap s-video cable off eBay today. True, the DC had a lot of recycled liibrary.. but at a much better resolution than the PS1. Dino Crisis comes to mind as such a port.
I recommend what has been said already (and will cost you an arm and a leg) Panzer Dragoon 1,2, Saga Shining Force 3 Part 1 (other 2 arent as good) Dragon Force Guardian Heroes Nights Magic Knight Rayearth Shining Wisdom Albert Odyssey Marvel Superheroes Street Fighter Collection Xmen vs Street Fighter Saturn Bomberman Radiant Silvergun Keio Flying Squadron 2 (a personal Favorite of mine)
virtually fighting! fighting vipers! and that other 3d fighting game by amd that had weapons. for the life of me can't recall...
I've said it before but I despise fighting games. They all feel like the same game with a new coat of paint.
Eh, it's not like 2D fighters have changed 1% since the late 90s. Still the same basic stuff with fireball special moves. They can toss in power moves and such but it's not worth buying the games again. If I really wanted to play a fighting game I'd get a freeware MUGEN setup. I officially got sick of 2D fighters when I picked up Capcom vs SNK on PS1 and realized it was no different from the other 2D fighters I'd played, and owned via emulation. X-Men, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, they're all the same basic game. Fighting games don't make up a signifigant portion fo the Saturn library either. It DID have RPGs and other stuff.
