I remember my first issue of Nintendo Power, I think it was showing off some new racing game on the cover.

I loved evey bit of it, my personal favorites being the "Letters" section and the poster that came inside.

But as time went on, I just went to the internet for all my gaming news and such, and I just lost interest.

But I did pick up an issue last year, and man, all those childhood memories of sitting in my room, reading some Nintendo Power while an episode of Ed, Edd n' Eddy was on in the background, they just hit me hard.

I kinda wish we got at least one more year, just so it could have its 25th anniversary.

RIP Nintendo Power, I still have every issue I ever bought sitting in a box somewhere. :(

Haven't bought an issue in a while. The Internet is destroying magazines. I always like the free gift. Nintendo treats their fans the best.

It was an awesome magazine back in the day. My first ever issue was the Chip and Dale cover (I think #8 before they started numbering it) and I subscribed until about #150 when I started to get out of video games and of course, the internet started destroying any need for most gaming magazines. I remember the competitors like GamePro and EGM, but I always stuck with my NP since I only ever owned Nintendo consoles back in the day.

I eventually got rid of most of them in a cleaning binge and regret it ever since (tore out a few choice articles), but I still have #1 to #63 so I own those with the most nostalgia. I picked up the last issue and enjoyed the homage on the cover. I'm eventually going to track most of them down again; a local bookstore usually gets quite a few used magazines, at least those in the 200's.

But it's sad to see them go, like most magazines and books in the digital age but it seems to be the cost of progress. And here I am shopping around for a tablet with the ability to download magazines.

Not really sad to see this go but I agree this played a huge part in the 80's playground. It's power, Nintendo power. I also remember the first time someone I know downloaded videogame information from the internet. It was Mortal Kombat II list of moves and fatalities, friendships, babilities etc. Such fun times as well.

The first time I read one was the first issue. Detailed maps of where warp zones were and seeing stages I never played were extremely helpful and entertaining at once. Even for games I've never played before, it felt like I was already playing it. A classmate of mine took the magazine out during lunch time and you can see the entire class huddled around him.

Then there was Game. Editors weren't assholes towards kids who actually took time to write something and/or just published the ones with more interesting questions or things to say. Ironically, EGM became my staple gaming information since it came out with the April Fool's edition of Shenglong in Street Fighter.

NP was a great magazine back in their early years. Their compilation guides for NES, SNES, and even some strategy guides for games like FFI & FFIII were fantastic. Sadly I don't think I've looked at the mags past the early 90's. Moved onto other publications like Gamefan, which was my mag of choice until it died, then onto the internets for any game news.

I can't really say I'm sad to see it go either, probably overdue imo, but I do remember lots of time spent reading them in childhood. It's just too hard to wait for monthly publications when internet can hook you up with down to the minute info right away, and videos, etc. Maybe they will find some kind of foothold online.

The internet isn't killing magazines; they and their industry are.

My first issue was the Super Mario 3 Player's Guide and I kept that subscription going until the transfer to Future even though I hadn't really read much of the magazine since the GameCube was out. The move to Future gave me the excuse I needed to let it lapse and not feel like I'd pulled the plug on somebody.

I miss the small publisher feel of the early days. Yeah, I know it was Nintendo of America, but it never struck me as a corporate magazine. I wrote in a few times and even drew my favorite characters on the envelopes in the hopes of getting printed in Player's Pulse. There's not another company in the world I'd ever do that for.

The industry changed, though, and Nintendo Power couldn't really change with it and still be Nintendo Power. Gaming is serious business now and every ounce of hype must be monetized. The magazine didn't have a very coherent presentation for the last several years, but I saw that happen to alot of magazines. If not for blogging/CMS software, the websites that everybody else seems to frequent would be just as haphazard (if not worse). Not a fan of any of those websites though and I think we're poorer for the loss of printed magazines despite the shape that many of them are/were in.

I did pick up the issue they put together on the 25th anniversary of the NES but I was afraid of what I'd find so I never opened it. I wish they could've made it to 25 years and had a proper send off but Nintendo seems to be going in a different direction these days.

I think I teared up a bit after reading the comic strip in the last issue.

Yeah the final comic of Nester really brings things to a heartfelt send-off. I am glad they made it the last thing in the magazine aside from the Game Over

I haven't bought a videogame magazine since the mid 90's. I stopped checking them since the late 90's. Given a variety of magazines back then I didn't want to miss out other console info. I can't remember the last Nintendo Power I bought but looking back, I only had maybe a handful. I had tons Gamepros then moved on to EGM. I'm actually surprised Nintendo Power lasted this long.

Used to look at these when I visited a friend's house during the 90s. (bought the one with the MetalStorm cover during a trip to Plattsburgh in summer of '91)

Great vid Protoman, thanks for sharing.

So Canda forced you to buy it that caused you to hate it so much? Oh wait, they didn't.
