Okay, so I'm watching G1 this week and I have a question. It seems that throughout the series, Megatron's goal was all about finding energy to take back home.
What the hell was Galvatron's goal? I don't remember him searching for energy sources like his predecessor was! All I saw was just an insane, mad, and evil robot!
Did Galvatron have a goal or was he just an insane in the membrane asshole?

I always pictured him as just a crazed lunatic that seized power and bent on destruction.

Yes, but a crazed lunatic who happened to be entertaining as all hell.

As a kid I guess I never really appreciated Galvatron, but as an adult he is pretty much the star of S3 imo.

In his more lucid moments, he remembered that he wanted to retake Cybertron for the Decepticons (see Dweller in the Depths and The Rebirth), but it seemed more often than not he was only interested in mucking up whatever worthwhile pursuit the Autobots had been undertaking any given week. At his worst, seems he couldn't manage much more than simply shooting anything that moved, typically his own soldiers.

Galvatron is a great character, mostly due to his utter batshit insanity. However...

...he doesn't really make a great Decepticon leader as he does mainly seem to lack a direction. Megatron at least believed in something.

Galvatron fits in better in the Marvel comics IMO as he is surrounded by other Decepticons who are usurping each other to take command of the army whilst Galvatron is in and out of the story (literally!) doing his own thing and basically causing chaos.
His battle with Ultra Magnus is epic.

By comparison Megatron always seemed slightly bland in the comics.

I like them both, I guess it just depends what mood I'm in. Things are certainly never ever boring when Galvatron is on screen/page, that is for sure.

I always saw it as originally they had the same goals, but he was messed up and driven insane following what happened to him after the movie, so all his schemes were just these mindless rampages. The series seems to recognize this, as "Web World" dealt with it extensively.

I would think Galvaton's goal was ultimately "have as much fun as possible by killing as many 'Bots/'Cons/people/kittens/and so forth as possible" - except that he really doesn't seem lucid enough to even create a plan that simple. I think the inside of his head would terrify anybody.

Megatron's G1 cartoon goal always seemed futile to me, as Cybertron had somehow survived for four million years whilst the Ark was in stasis, so they really couldn't have needed Energon that badly in the first place. Someone told me they fix this problem in the comics (which I haven't read) but still, if you only watch More Than Meets the Eye 1 - 3 you do ask yourself why Energon is such a big problem. XD

Out of the two, Megs has the more practical goal, whilst Galvy has the more fun goal. But really, they're both as bad as each other. :>

Megatron's objective: Conquer the universe through aquiring more Energon.

Galvatron's objective: Conquer the universe by destroying everything in his path.

    Similar goals, different methods.

I also noticed Megatron "cared" more for his fellow Decepticons than Galvatron who only cared about him self.
