Go-Bots #3 by Tom Scioli on Apple Books Full Preview and covers via Preview: Go-Bots #3 - Graphic Policy
... GoBots? Retro art? Retro storytelling? Go-Bots has always been the less serious cousin to all the other giant robot 80's shows.
I can appreciate what they are attempting to go for with this, but I feel like they needed to pull back on it just a bit. There's nostalgia for certain retro visuals, and then there's times where it feels like it's just being substituted for a lack of actual creativity.
I can't tell you how badly I want a comic that continues in the spirit of the show and how gut-wrenching this is at times.
At no time will I ever look at this art and think it looks any less than the work of a half-assed amateur.
Wow. Nope. I can appreciate the appeal of retro at times, but this just looks lazy. While most work hard to improve their art and put out a quality project, it's frustrating that some artists win the lottery and get to have a nice career even though they put out amateur stuff. Oh well it's not the first time and won't be the last. Good for him, I guess.
Y'know... the GIJOE/Transformers stuff that Scioli was doing had a sort of brazen, surreal quality. There was something there. Looking at this preview, more than anything else, it reminds me of the robot comics I used to draw as an elementary school kid. The tiny panels, the compositions and pacing, the awkwardly deadpan captions. I'm not sure if it makes me feel nostalgic or just weirdly dismayed. zmog
Well, I hated his TFGIJoe, but I liked the first 2 issues of this. I know a lot of GoBots fans seem to hate this; maybe it's because I'm new to GoBots and the dislike is similar to my dislike of his TF work. Regardless, this has me interested in GoBots now. So...that's good, right?
