GI.Joe was once a great franchise in the 80's, with a movie. Had a few cartoons, afterwards and only 2 movies GI.Joe: The Rise Of Cobra and GI.Joe Retaliation. But what I really want to know, what ever happened to the franchise? it's not as popular as it used to be. But a new movie is to come in 2016, but there's no cartoon to be aired. Do people still love GI.Joe?
I still love it. For me personally, I was amped up when Retaliation was going to be released in June/July then got pushed to march. The toy line got released, then pulled....then released and then hard to find (until later). I ended up really liking retaliation, but that same excitement wasn't there. I still throw in Resolute every once in a while, with the 50th figures coming out, my interest is "kinda" there, but nothin like it used to be.
Never really thought about it. Speaking personally, I never really had much interest in G.I.Joe aside from Renegades, where I was interested mostly due in part to the story. Otherwise I just found Transformers to be a cooler franchise.
Love GI Joe. Some of the best toys around and it was a big part of my childhood. Renegades was a really terrific cartoon and I wish that had gotten a full blown toyline. Haven't picked up any of their comics and it's sad that the Joes only blip on the radar when they get a new movie. The last two movies were nothing to write home about.
After Transformers, G.I. Joe is the series of my childhood. G.I. Joe: Resolute the mini web series written by Warren Ellis is a great "mature" revisit to ARAH. This TRAILER was shown at SDCC 2008. Notice the lack of lazer guns. G.I Joe: Renegades was a neat update to the series and could've served as a nice reboot, but unfortunately didn't become as popular. Movies... I liked Retaliation better than Rise of Cobra, but it's not without it's head-shaking moments (Duke? Seriously, what a waste) Now you know...
I like G.I. Joe as well. If it wasn't for space and financial constraints, I'd love to have all these new reissues. I really enjoyed Resolute. The recent movies were ok. Glad I got the Extended part II blu ray. Makes it a little better. However, whenever I talk to friends about it, it's hard to trivialize war the way G.I. Joe does, esp with the lack of deaths, and take it seriously. Resolute at least had important characters dying. This Robot Chicken sketch kinda summarizes it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-VGyp8PJIk
Did GI.Joe ran out of popularity? Hasbro, instead of investing on GI.Joe, they are supporting Transformers. Why you think Transformers is what it is today, cause of the fanbase, GI.Joe has their fanbase, but Hasbro is not that focused on GI.Joe
What need is there for G.I.Joe when kids have Battlefield and Call of Duty. And transformers is always reinventing itself with every new version. Every optimus brings some new to the table. Every optimus toy is something different. But with g.i. joe, if you have one snake eyes, you might as well have them all. Like the franchise experienced in the 80s, it needs something fresh to take kids take notice of it again. Don't know what that is exactly, maybe something like skylanders. You mean in 2007, the same year they started the 25th Anniversary line.
Yep that was the year (7 years ago) and I bought a lot of them. I'm not saying investing stopped all at once but I do think after a point it tapered off. I know they are planning a few releases for the 30th anni. But it's not a lot. As for Gi joe? Yeah, I'm sick to death of SE and Duke. I really think they should introduce new characters and change the adversary a bit. Cobra can still be in the story but perhaps we can have CC be missing for some reason and someone else takes over Cobra. A unknown new character? Maybe they should face a ancient threat? NOT COBRA LA.
But it wasn't the A Real American Hero storyline. I think that's why it didn't work. I'm thinking of changing the old main storyline.
Revenge of COBRA is the absolute pinnacle of animated GI Joe. They never reached this level again, although a few episodes of the regular series come close. This story is bonkers in all the best ways, and Shipwreck has the all-time greatest line in Joe history after almost being buried alive.
I really like the GI Joe cartoon. I saw it before G1 Transformers, for the first time, back in the day on Cartoon Express on USA. And, when HUB used to (exist) and aired it regularly, I watched quite a lot of GI Joe episodes. Became quite a fan of them. I actually think in most ways, GI Joe is actually Sunbow's best made cartoon. (At least that I've seen.) Even if a lot of the episodes are ridiculous and over the top. It's been quite a long time since I last saw this show, I really need to watch it again.
The original Gi Joe and especially the first mini series were very well animated. Sure there are errors here and there, but things are always moving and blowing up. You had amazing adventures every week and the stuff they showed would be hard to do today in live action at even with today's cgi. At the very least it would be very expensive. But we got it every week, and late everyday afternoon in the 80s. And it was fun. I miss when shows were animated that well.
