I've been trying to get some people hooked on MTMTE but thus far they haven't really seemed all that interested. I'm curious if people think that MTMTE #12 is stand alone enough that someone could read it without any context. That issue is one of my favorite comics I've read in an extremely long time so of all the MTMTE comics, I think this would have the best chance. Do you guys think another issue would work better? How can I infect- er I mean spread this series?
Pushing, huh? I'd go with LSotW. Fairly self-contained, and all the main characters get introduced in some capacity. Wraps up well enough too.
Tried it. One person read it and enjoyed it but is still resisting the next hit. I even flipped out in his presence when it was revealed Overlord was on the ship.
This issue was one of the best so far because of the actions and revelations of the characters we've come to know. I don't think it would be a great jumping in point tbh. It might make them want to read earlier issues to understand what the deal with Whirl and Cyclonus or Cyclonus and Tailgate etc is, but without already having that background I reckon they might find it hard to really empathise the way us long time readers have. I really think the best way is to get them to start at the beginning and tell them to keep at it, tell them to at least try and absorb as much detail as they can because the pay offs get increasingly rewarding.
Its a hard thing for us here to judge. Were all tf fans, and these comics are like the best thing to ever happen to tf comics without question. I sort of thought the two annuals might be good introductions, but the mtmte annual art was kind of rushed and awkward, and with all the flashbacks and stuff going on maybe the annuals have TOO much going on. I don't know, why do I love tf more than any other nerdy thing. Batman ,spderman, warhammer, star wars, I like all those things, and spidrman is probably my favorite comic book character, but I don't really want to get involved in either marvel OR DC cause I don't want to end up having to buy 20 different marvel comics just to follow my favorite character (admittedly, IDW kind of screwed me on that one too with 3 running comics right now and 1 or 2 miniseries or one shots each month. I do t fault you for trying, I've given mtmte and rid big.ups to anyone who would listen over the last year, but in some respect I think you have to be a tf fan before you are ready to receive the awesome that is mtmte and rid
You didn't mention if this person was already a TF fan but didn't read the comics, or if they're completely new to TFs. If they're completely new, MTMTE might be a tough sell, just because it's aimed so much at long term fans. Maybe RID could be the entry point instead, since it seems to be getting much more attention from "casuals". Then push them onto MTMTE after they're hooked?
I dunno. If there is any issue of MTMTE I'd recommend it's the first one. Issue 12 could be a good jump on point but you will already be clueless about some of the character relations going on. Issue 1 is fresh for everybody, sets the tone, and has an amazing ending. If they're not hooked after this then MTMTE is probably not for them. But the Overlord reveal is so much cooler when you've read LSOTW.
On the other hand, a single line of explanation could be enough to kick it off. "This is about an eclectic mix of Autobots who decide to go exploring after the great war when Megatron disappears and Optimus Prime retires."
I would forcefeed the death of optimus prime and then follow up on mtmte 1-3 if they like it then go last stand of the wreckers followed by Mtmte 4 - 8, Chaos theory, 9 -12
Explaining transformers appeal at all to a non believer is very tricky as all the good transformers fiction in general relies on the viewer having at least a bit of knowledge of the mythology or interest in the franchise in the first place. I also have a few non-fan friends who I would love to pass these comics on to but sadly I went to see Revenge of the fallen with some of them at the cinema as a group and lets just say they were laughing all the way through and not in a good way, so if I'm honest I wouldn't know how to turn there minds around given there bad experience of the franchise. The good thing that the movies have achieved though is that the basic set up of autobots lead by optimus fighting decepticons lead by megatron etc have become common knowledge so that is one less potentially awkward thing left to explain. It is far from ideal introduction into the franchise but I have to go with last stand of the wreckers then followed by chaos chaos theory, death of optimus prime and then into more than meets the eye. Just say all copies of heart of darkness perished in the great comic fire of 2011 and all online copies have computer destroying viruses installed onto them and try and explain to your inductee roughly what nonsence took place in those comics
My assumption is that a new reader might prefer seeing the more mainstream characters in RID, instead of the obscure or made-up guys in MTMTE. I mean, *we* love an eclectic mix of characters, but will Joe Random be interested in them? I guess it depends on the person. Hey, if we're inventing disasters, can we have a biological virus that infects all the reader's brains and erases certain memories? I'd be willing to kill off a few brain cells if I could target the ones that are storing HoD.
