An expert cave explorer was rescued yesterday in Germany after spending the last 2 weeks underground some 3,280 feet after being injuried in a rock fall, leading to head injuries. Johann Westhauser, an experienced caver, had gone into the Riesending cave system in the Alps with two companions to carry out research and measurements. He was hit in the head during a June 8 rock fall while nearly 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) underground. In all, 728 people from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Croatia participated in the operation, operation director Klaus Reindl told reporters in nearby Berchtesgaden. ‘‘Since the birth of caving, there have been only two incidents of this depth, complexity and difficulty,’’ Italian rescuer Roberto Conti said. A fit expert could climb from the accident site to the entrance in about 12 hours, but rescuers had to haul Westhauser on a stretcher. The cave entrance is on a mountainside, 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level. I can say with upmost certainy that I would have lost it in such a tight space after only a few hours, not close to 14 days. WOW! "I'm thinking of something large and gray" "Rocks" "Right! Ok, now, I'm thinking of something large. And gray' "Rocks. And just a guess the next one is rocks" "ok, now that's just creepy" "No wonder I've started talking to myself"
They don't do some kind of buddy system or in and out counts when they do this that's ridiculous. If you count 3 people going into the cave and you are supposed to all leave through the same place if 2 come out you should know someone's missing? It should be a caving rule like Thunderdome but easier 3 men enter 3 men leave. I would be pissed at my companions.
Well you can survive anywhere as long as you have clean water. Well that's good they rescued that guy.
