I finally managed to find a Generations Whirl, decided to paint him up to look less G1-toy-ish, and more IDW-ey.

I got rid of the yellow blades and ankles, repainted the red stripes in navy blue. Removed the silver on his thighs, as well as most of the darker blue on his lower legs. Painted the beams on his cockpit, and added a small reprolabel (I thought the stickers provided were too big, and could use the white outline on them).

Repainted his head, did a tiny bit of weathering on his claws, feet and shoulders. Nothing too extreme, but I think i like his overall look better now.

Thanks for looking, as always, comments and critiques are much appreciated :)

    *UPDATE

Yeah, I'm never really quite finished a figure....haha
I gave my Whirl a new eye last night, (last 3 pics) it looks like glass and has a nice glowing flashy look to it when it reflects light.
It's just a gem cellphone sticker that I put a few dollops of paint on to make it rounded and yellow. Simple, but very effective.
I promise I'll stop fixing him now!

Although I dislike the removal of the Yellow blades, this is some very nice work. Good Job!

The trim around the blast shield does wonders. Love it!

    very nice color combo!!!
(btw, you do realize his helicopter tail slots/fits into the two main rotor shell halves right?there's even grooves in there.once you do it,it stiffens his whole upper back area and makes it less floppy)

Nice work man, what paint did you use? Also did you add or remove paint to make his thighs blue?

Thanks for the tip, guess I have a reason to fiddle with him some more! I'll see if I can tighten him up. Just when I thought this mold didn't have any more "surprises"! Haha
First the shoulders-can-be-pushed-in thing, then the neck that can lift up, now the back pieces...

Thanks very much, I used Tamiya paints. I matched the light blue by mixing sky blue, violet and white. I just removed the silver paint from the thighs, it's actually light blue plastic under there.

Good to know. You use alcohol, or paint thinner, I just bought a whirl and I'd like to make him more IDWish.

If I remember correctly, I believe I popped his legs off where they connect to the upper thigh joint, and soaked the silver parts in acetone for a little while. The silver paint will just rub right off, I even managed to get it out of the hollow parts in the sides.

You remove the canopy before painting it? if so which way does the pin pop out?

Nope, I didn't take the canopy off. I did shave a bit off the inside of the hinge so there wouldn't be any rub when I painted it, but other than that, no prep work. Just needed a steady hand :D

Cool how a small change of paint can change a figures aesthetic. He does look more IDW now.
