Yeah, I need more info about it to judge it. Not a big fan of the graphical style but I know next to nothing about the game itself (other than it was a Japan-exclusive MMO and the international one will be single player) so I will reserve judgement. For the record, I hate when an RPG series makes a numbered entry an MMO. FF did it twice, and I never gave those 2 games a second glance.
Personally I'm fine with 10 Offline's graphical style. The franchise over the years has had several different graphical styles for the games so having another one doesn't make me blink.
I missed this news when it came out, the mobile game "Dragon Quest of The Stars" is shutting down it's servers at the end of this month, originally reported in March. I tried it when it came out, it was fun, but had to cut the number of apps I had installed down. Notable for only being active in the West for about a year, though like this article points out, it's been online in Japan since 2015. 'Dragon Quest of The Stars' Is Shutting Down This June Following Its Launch Last Year on iOS and Android Worldwide
I only played a little bit of Dragon Quest of the Stars but it didn't really grab me and I cut it in favor of a few other games. Makes me worried that Dragon Quest Tact will shut down too though. Been really enjoying that one and I hope it does better here.
I understand, but while Stars was in Japan for about 5 years before it came to the West, Tact only came out in Japan last year, so unless the game itself does pretty poorly overall, I think you can expect years of Tact being supported.
Something I didn't know, the regular version of Dragon Quest X is still getting expansions. Really makes me wish we were getting the online version, but what are you going to do? Here's an article and trailer for a major update coming to Japan this fall. Dragon Quest X Version 6 expansion announced - Gematsu
And before I start wearing out my welcome, here's a video by an English speaking couple going through the new Dragon Quest Island experience in Japan.
Glad to see a thread here. If you’ve never played DQ3, I’d try it before the remake. It’s one of my absolute favorites, and DQ1-3 are all dirt cheap for mobile.
Good advice. I missed out on the American NES version growing up, so my first time playing III was the Game Boy Color version when I started college. I still have that cartridge.
That’s an excellent version. The mobile post lets you fight the Zenith dragon for a wish, letting you bring back your dad, among other things. It’s a nice nod to the Zenithian Trilogy (4-6).
Two things to add: Dragon Quest is like comfort food. Because the series shares the same art style and basically the same playstyle, it lets you jump right in and enjoy each entry. The series plays with a lot of different themes, but using the same tools. Like a really skilled acting troupe putting on a whole gamut of plays. And for the second one a confession: I really struggle to play DQ6. I have yet to start that game and finish it. I always trail off somewhere around the place you can change professions, which is where everyone tells me the game starts to get good.
For me, I haven't played V and VI yet despite V's rep being godly. I missed out on the DS releases for some reason despite having the systems at the time (I think I was either really busy, really poor, or both during their release), and while I do own the moblie versions, both my current mobile devices are very low in storage space, so I have to wait till I at least upgrade my phone. At least I have some sort of official version on hand when the time's right. Aside from X, at least I started all the other releases. Thankfully, I lucked into buying a used copy of IX last year at an local retro game store for about 35 bucks.
DQV is as good as you’ve heard. It really is. It has an interesting Pokémon mechanic you can bust right open, as well as the romance tree options. And it explores a very interesting theme on parentage and how you support your children as they embrace their destiny.
I gave up on VI. I got the submarine, and now I don’t know what to do. Search the entire bottom of the ocean? Ok…
If the Facebook post I got this from is correct, this is from a brand new Dr. Slump manga special Akira Toriyama just released.
Been a while since I played VI but if I remember correctly, the only places you are absolutely required to go underwater are the Underwater Shrine, Style Contest, Sunken Ship, and King Poseidon. Everywhere else is optional. A shame but understandable. I absolutely love Dragon Quest VI but I also understand that it has one of the weaker narratives in the series. A fun fact about VI though is that its the first game in the series (and to the best of my knowledge the only one) to get a complete manga adaptation.
That’s not a knock on the game. I just bog down there with the desire to master/obtain as many classes as possible. And what comes next gets lost and then I’m done. I am planning to try again this summer, so maybe I’ll get through.
