Yesterday, there was a Dragon Quest press event, timed with the 35th anniversary of the first game's release in Japan, with a number of announcements, including the announcement of a true sequel, "Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate", a 2D/3D remake of Dragon Quest III, an offline version of Dragon Quest X with the characters redesigned as chibi, and others. Since the only threads I saw in Search were for specific games, I thought it'd be better to create a new general thread for the franchise over tacking this on the DQ XI thread. Trailer for DQ III's remake is in the link: Square Enix reveals Dragon Quest 12, Dragon Quest 3 ‘HD-2D’ remake Trailer for DQX Offline
You beat me to it, I was going to make a thread about this too. I have to admit, I questioned whether a general DQ thread could survive on its own and concluded that the forum could probably use a general RPG thread where news like this could be posted. You could make this thread into that if you wanted, but that’s up to you. Anyway, I was excited about this. After loving DQVIII & DQXI so much I’ve been wanting to go back and play the rest of the series (only other one I’ve played is DQI on NES, which I finished but it didn’t blow me away), so this DQIII remake would make it a lot easier to play what I’ve heard is one of the best in the series. I was really stoked about DQXII until I heard they’re trying again to replace the traditional turn based battles with a more action-RPG style, which is troubling to me. Part of the reason I love DQVIII and DQXI so much is the simple battle system. But even if the battle system remains traditional, I likely will not buy the first iteration of DQXII, as I fully expect SE to do what they did with XI and release an “enhanced” version later. I waited with DQXI and I’m glad I did; among other QOL improvements, I GOTTA have my orchestral score
I'm just hoping III's remake will make it to Steam, if it does, I'll be happy. As for this thread surviving, it'd be nice if it did, but if it gets forgotten, it's not going to hurt me. Hopefully there'll be more news to post, or just random DQ fan stuff people can feel free to throw in here.
I have such a soft spot for this series. It's a weird but perfect balance of laid back, silly, strategic, and dramatic that shouldn't work, but totally does. I first got into it in sometime in the early 90's, after the SNES released. Got 1,2, and 4 from good old Funco land. Even with the games being blown away technologically by the SNES Final Fantasies, I still grew to love them. Dragon Warrior 4 in particular was so good I liked it more than most SNES rpgs. The announcement of a remake of 3 is perfect for me. That's the only main line title I haven't gotten for my collection. So it'll be a whole new adventure for me.
Awesome. I became a huge fan of III from first playing the Game Boy Advanced release when that came out. Speaking of which, might as well throw the III remake trailer on here afterall.
Reading through the press release, I'm also very intrigued by the Erik and Mia (from DQ11) spinoff. Their relationship is so hearfelt and sweet that I'm very interested in playing through their backstory. They don't say much about it. Just that it'll be a rpg, but not a traditional one, and that it will be focused around treasure hunting. Makes me think that it might be an action rpg like the Legend of Zelda. Maybe switching between them to solve puzzles like in some Wind Waker dungeons.
It wouldn't be the first time. Starting with the 16-bit era, Torneko Taloon, the middle aged merchant that became one of the playable party members in "Dragon Quest IV", had a series of games centered on dungeon exploration so that he can gather weapons and be the weapons merchant extraordinaire.
Looking forward to DQ3 the most since Spoiler DQ11 is a prequel to as well as the rest of the original trilogy .
Yangus, one of the main characters from Dragon Quest VIII, also had his own prequel dungeon game centering around him and Red/Gerda as 12 year olds, "Young Yangus' Mysterious Dungeon". Funny enough, it also reveals that the universe of VIII has it's own version of Torneko, who mentors Yangus.
Treasure looks interesting *was disappointed it wasn't monsters* But with the rumors of them trying to "Westernize" Dragon Quest and the look of the DQ XII logo.. I have concerns about it.
Oh God, I certainly hope they don’t go in that direction. FF is so far off the rails it’s not even funny. Squeenix should leave FF as the “experimental” series, where they try all their new shit, and leave DQ alone as the “traditional” RPG series.
I'd hope it doesn't lose the humor or general good nature, which I think are among the things that make DQ stand out. I'll include the sexy humor with that. It'd be suicide if they decide to let go of Akira Toriyama's art for some reason. In the very least, if Toriyama feels the need to retire due to age, they should really try hard to recruit his Dragon Ball heir, Toyotarō.
They've done this plenty of times. The very first Dragon Quest Monsters game starred Terry from DQVI: And the third Dragon Quest Monsters game, Caravan Heart, starred Kiefer, from DQVII:
Because of the 35th anniversary event, there's also a cross-platform Dragon Quest game sale going on. On Steam for instance, XI, Builders 2, and both DQ Heroes games are discounted until the 9th of June. Other systems have different games on sale.
I'm sorry, I love Dragon Quest, but I hate "announcement trailers" like that that tell you absolutely nothing. Like, we're getting another installment of a series that's proven very popular over multiple decades and is a staple of video games now? Wow! Hit me when you've got some actual info! Spoiler: Dragon Quest XIII Spoilers There's going to be one.
As for my thoughts on "Dragon Quest X Offline", I'm actually not too crazy about redesigning the characters to be chibi style over the more realistically proportioned designs the regular version of X has. I've seen fans express a fondness for it for being nostalgic towards the older DQ designs, I just don't find it personally appealing when there's the other versions as an comparison that appeal to me a lot more, but I respect those favorable opinions. I'd still buy it though if it came out for the west on a platform I own, it's totally not a deal-breaker for me.
