As with my megaman post above, I’m also a massive shadow of the colossus fan (collectors Edition for ps4 and statue displayed because I have no life) and despite that I can honestly say the games controls SUCK. Huge fan but even I know they suck. Tried getting my gf to play it and she quite within 1 or two minutes just on the controls alone. I don’t blame you at all for snapping the game in half xD it’s like the creators thought “we have an amazing vision for for a new game, we want all the coolest designers and ideas put into it’s creation...but also PLEASE make the controls as INFURIATING as possible so as to destroy whatever work we put into this game!” XD

What is super funny (to me anyway) is when they announced the remake on ps4, I thought maybe now FINALLY they will make the controls perfect so everyone can enjoy this game...annnnd nope :)  still infuriating as the original

Wow, you need to post this in the Unpopular Opinions thread ;)

SotC is among my favorite games EVER, but I totally get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s kind of a puzzle game disguised as an action game. A lot of people like it, but the ones that don’t DESPISE it.

Which brings me on-topic with another Fumito Ueda game...
I rented Ico and gave up on it fairly quickly, but that was due to me not understanding how the game wanted me to do things.

I was under the impression that I had to lead Yorda from room to room WHILE being chased by the black ghost things. I thought they were invincible, and I could only fend them off with my stick. As you might imagine, playing the game this way was infuriating. I got farther than you might think, but eventually I had enough. Then later I read that the ghosts are destructible; ended up buying the game and loving it.

Wow, that statue is the bomb.
I really wish they’d make smaller figures of the colossi that I could afford.

That was an awesome game. I only played until I got the fake screen that everything in my memory card was deleted. I immediately turned off the system only to find my card was corrupted. I lost my Toys R Us mew in Pokémon X.D. from it. I sold the card for cash and went to another GameStop to bought another 1051 memory card and a 59 memory card that I use only for Eternal Darkness...

But I haven't played the game in 13 years. I got to get the courage to play it again.

I found SotC to be artful. It's the second favorite game that my dad has played. He found it amazing and beautiful. His other favorite games are RE: Umbrella Chronicles, RE: Darkside Chronicles, Operation Wolf and Duck Hunt.

AH! I just remembered what other game I gave up on: I'm pretty sure a lot of people will agree that Metroid Prime: Federation Force was a big time flop. I just could not enjoy it. And I hated the chibi style of the characters. I didn't care the blaster ball game or whatever it was called.

Sometimes I wonder if game developers ACTUALLY play test their own game to see if it's up to standards.

Besides my previous example that was caused by a bug, I can say that my own video game skills are only moderate, even when I was younger and played more often, so I've also gave up on some for being beyond my skills.
-NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles : never got past the third level with the overhead and sewer jumps. Funny enough, my appreciation for that game grew over the years and would support another official re-release somewhere.
-PS1 Mega Man 8: never could pass the snowboarding portion of the Dr. Wily levels.
-PS2 Grand Theft Auto 3 and GTA Vice City: Story modes got too hard for me eventually. I forgot where I left off in 4, couldn't get past some of the porno studio promotion jobs in Vice City. I found the GTA V era a lot more forgiving.

Alien Isolation. Once I looked up some Markiplier walkthroughs and saw how long it is, I quit.

Also never finished Riku’s side of Re: Chain of Memories because I got bored.

That game triggers me, man. o_O  I actually had to shorten my post so it wasn't as rant-y.

A masochist, eh? :D  I can respect that.

DragonAge: Origins. The combat is garbage, the visuals are very muddy and unpleasant, and it’s RPG system makes bugger all sense.

In fact it’s thanks to DragonAge II that I like the setting at all.

    Another one: Kingdom Hearts.
I gave it a chance, but it’s just...a mediocre game once you get past the Disney cameos. IMO, one of the most overrated series ever. I gave up after maybe an hour or so.

And Birth By Sleep has got to be among the absolute stupidest titles of any game ever.

I think I said "fuck this game!" and quit for months several times with Dark Souls 3.

I feel weird for saying it, but I got really bored after playing Outer Worlds for a hour. I normally like those games, but so far it isnt sucking me in. I might have to muscle through it more to start enjoying it.

I brought this up before...Beyond the Beyond. Straight from the first overworld time its a challenge. Didnt think there was a game where I have to level up/grind just to continue.

Leveled a little and gave up.

Not exactly "giving up", but I've had a bad habit before of getting right up to the end in JRPGs and then putting them aside, quite likely to never get finished. Frequently it's because I have this dumb completist urge to build up my characters to their maximum possible power, which frequently involves a lot of tedious chores and repetitive fights to max out on stat-building items and whatnot. Eventually I just get bored of that and drift off and start something else instead, to the point where I'd almost rather start the first game over again, but never do. And thus it goes unfinished.

I've never finished Final Fantasy VI or Tales of Destiny 2 (Eternia) as a result. That mentality has also stalled playthroughs of Final Fantasy VII and VIII before, although I have beat them before. Kingdom Hearts was in that spot for awhile, but I fairly recently gave it another start and made sure to beat it that time.

I'm currently sort of stuck in that rut with Kingdom Hearts II though - Critical Mode is kind of kicking my ass with some of the optional sidequests/bosses, which has temporarily sapped my will to keep playing. I'll probably get back to it soon enough, though.

My playthrough of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is similarly stalled-out, although not really near the end. I don't think I ever really got the full grasp of the game's new battle system compared to its predecessors. I sorta brute-forced my way up to a certain point, and put it down when I couldn't make any progress due to my failing skills. I really do need to pick it up again and dig in deeper.

Started up a playthrough of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age fairly recently, and didn't get very far because I simply didn't understand it very well. Couldn't figure out how to get the Gambits set up so that I wasn't either dying, or burning through Potions every fight. I'll give it another stab one of these days.

Final Fantasy III (DS/IOS remake) on the other hand was one that I really did just give up on. Simplistic storytelling didn't really make me want to keep playing, and the clunky Jobs system just dragged out the level grind in an insufferable way. I gave up at that early dungeon where your physical skills are near-useless, forcing you to switch everybody to a Mage class. Since half my party was woefully underdeveloped in that area, it made progression an absolute slog, and I just dropped it right then.

I think though, that my one single greatest instance of videogame PTSD was from The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. After spending hours and hours of research and testing, I had finally sorted out my mods in way I was happy with, and I finally made my first truly earnest attempt at the game after maybe 5-10 false starts. And then, a good ten (not particularly productive, given the tendency to aimlessly wander) hours into the game, I ventured into some random bandit den. Halfway through the network of tunnels, I discover that some rat bastard had somehow cursed me, sapping my strength to zero. I was in a permanently over-encumbered state. Even if I stripped myself buck-naked, I could only inch around at a snail's pace. Spent a week of in-game time attempting to rest it off, fending off random Dark Brotherhood interruptions along the way, but the effect seemed to be permanent, and I was, for all intents and purposes, frozen in place. And of course I had saved my file. That broke me right there, and I never bothered to pick up the game right there. Even after learning about using the game's console mode to fix the "glitch" state, that just took me right out of the whole experience, especially knowing that such utter bullshittery could happen at any moment for seemingly no reason, and in my mind, using the console broke the immersive experience and was "cheating". Knowing that Bethesda games are still prone to random bullshit like that, I've never really been able to give them a serious shot afterwards. I made a token attempt at Skyrim, but I couldn't even get my initial mod suite running properly and pretty much gave up before I even started.

Come to think of (PLZ DONT HATE ME! lol) I've never finished RE4 for the GameCube! I think @ the time I was phasing out my GameCube and I was still one of them ppl who hated the new direction RE was taking with the behind the shoulder gameplay and the Non zombie Tentacle enemies. I recall playing thru the village and calling it quits. I did however play and completed RE5 and Cried playing RE6,RE7 was ok and RE2RM was a blast!

I’ve seen people speed run it like it’s nothing. But man it is brutally unforgiving until you get to that skill level! 25 minutes is impressive!!

    @mx-01 archon
I’m the same way. Several years ago I made a stack of all the games I had that I’d never beaten & most of them were rpgs. I did finish them but the time sink is steep for a lot of those.

@Mako Crab Man them Speedrun folks are crazy.!!! Everytime I watch a run my jaw just drops and I'm amazed how easy they make it look especially for ridiculously difficult games we grew up playing.
