I just finished Persona 3 Portable and honestly... it was a mediocre game, mechanics-wise. The dungeons are repetative, most of the gameplay is point & click, many of the sidequests are just fetch quests, and the enemy designs are heavily recycled. Yet... I really like this game. It was fun and I liked the story. I wish more games were willing to go places this one did when it came to standard JRPG tropes.

Another for me is the Dynasty Warriors series. Yes, it's mindless button smashing for the most part, but it's fun mindless button smashing. Plus, it covers one of my favorite periods to read about. Quite honestly, when I last re-read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I found myself imaging them in the DW designs, despite how impractical many of them are. :D

So, what are some games you know aren't going to win any awards, but you still really like?

Was never good at things like the racing games, for example Burnout (I think it was?) it was a fun game just found it hard, made my eyes go funny.

Any fighting game by Capcom (I personally like them, but the general consensus is that anything made by Capcom is instantly bad and they're the devil, or something).
The Dynasty Warriors Gundam series as well.

I kind of liked Total Recall for the NES.

And despite the original arcade Strider being a (frustrating) classic, it was horribly programmed. The same can be said of Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2.

Dante's Inferno was great. Many said it was a God of War ripoff and not good but, I loved it.

I've got a whole bunch of RPGs and other adventure games in this category. I by and large enjoyed them and got my money's worth out of them.

Anything made by the MODERN Capcom, actually. If it was made before they cancelled Mega Man Legends 3, it's good :p

What's your favorite fighting game by Capcom? Mine's Darkstalkers Chronicle. My favorite characters are probably Lord Raptor and Jon Talbain :p  Too bad they'll never show up in a crossover game because they don't dress up like centerfolds in a weird horror/fetish magazine...

an old PS1 game called Offworld Interceptor Extreme.

Game literally bleeds 90s, with horribly cheesy FMV bits, where your character and his buddy play this odd MST3K type role, mocking the screen, yet at the same time are still in the scene. Game play is pretty bad, even by the standards of the day, but hell, it's a guilty pleasure I guess.

Here's the intro video, just to show how goofy it is, with some gameplay at the end

I remember that game! (can't see the video at work, but I remember the name). I remember thinking it was pretty fun (I probably didn't know any better!) and playing VS. mode with my sister. Wow that was a long time ago.

Atari ET. Supposedly the worst game ever made but I had a lot of fun playing it when I was six.

I agree with this. It was one of the only Atari games I could beat, and at least the character looked like ET.

I also LOVED Two Worlds 2. It's kinda like Skyrim: Light. However, I think it has one advantage over Skyrim in that it lets you do on the fly armor set swapping. The animation during story suquences is awful, but that's the worst part I think.

I also loved NES TMNT and Castlevania 2. I know the internet has turned on these games, but most of the NES playing kids I knew loved these games. I can clearly see the design issues in these games for today, but it just didn't seem abnormal back then.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2006. Broken and frustrating as hell, but fun to play.

Deadly Premonition. It looks like a early PS2 game, the controls are clunky and the game has lots of bugs. But I love it.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. It's hard as hell, but I love the gameplay mechanics and the music is bitchin'.

    Final Fantasy XIII.

Also, love me some Dynasty Warriors Gundam, though I consider those, especially the third one, to be decent.
