Is this the final novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series, or a prequel?

No just a prequel book about the history . There are still 2 books ( Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring)that are suppossed to be released but Ive given up hope of them ever releasing at least under GRRM. The last main line book was released in 2011 and starting from season 5 most of the stuff in the show has not yet happened in the books

There are other books, and just try to imagine if they decide to make movies about theese books, it have to be something awesome. They already made the best series in the TV history, so i think they probable can do it again to make happy humanity

The main ASOIAF books have already been adapted in the series. The other ones are the Dunk and Eggs ones as well as the various histories of Westeros books. They have already confirmed a TV prequel series set during the Long Night and various other TV spin offs as well

Stephen King had to get hit by a car and see his life flash before his eyes before he finally buckled down and finished the Dark Tower stories. Maybe Mr. Martin needs a similar bit of encouragement.

Here is a interview with him from a few days ago
'I've been struggling with it': George RR Martin on The Winds of Winter

I think the big problem is that he introduced a lots of characters in the middle parts that complicated the story too much and I dont think he know how to get to the ending with the way it is now. The show did the right thing and didnt adapt them so it is way less complicated in the show

Yeah it was like he just kept adding more and more subplots and secondary characters and never really considered what that meant for being able get everything to converge to a conclusion.

It’s heresy I know, but at this point even if we get WoW (which I think is 50/50 at best) I’m not sure I’ll read it. Certainly I won’t be lining up to buy it day one. Because I’m not sure I want to invest more time in something that we will already know the ending to (via the show). And I think there is very little chance Martin will actually finish the series. He seems far more interested in all his side projects. Probably because he knows he’s written himself into a hole and doesn’t want to deal with it anymore.

I do think that we will get WoW but there is 0% that we will get DoS at least not by Martin

I used to be 95% sure we would get WoW but now with it dragging on so long I’ve revised my estimate.

This aired before True Detective last night. Apparently it's a big deal...
