They sure did. I guess the overall designs for locations and scenery were initially sketched by the more well-known production staff names such as Floro Dery, then the actual painted legwork was farmed out to a team of artists. This may be slightly outside the remit of the thread, but Dery's sketches themselves are pretty cool... That Blackrock logo was added by me for my YouTube version (an Easter Egg I guess you'd call it), referencing the comics. It's always interested me how the two continuities often parallel each other, such as having a Decepticon attack on an oil rig early on, or the Creation Matrix/Leadership Matrix, or Jetfire/Skyfire changing sides. Anyway, although G.B. Blackrock was absent from the toon, the show did briefly depict an oil company called 'Black Diamond'. Black rock, Black Diamond... Coincidence? Here's a background piece I've captured specially for this post! Cheers folks!
Well done! That explains why I didn't remember seeing it. I've only recently gotten into the comics a bit. The artwork is something I've been appreciating more, both Marvel US and UK.
Wow, thanks for the kind words! If it fooled you I must have done a good job! Much like the tv show there is some great comic art and some...not so great. I must admit I have a special fondness for Marvel UK's early painted strips. Occasionally I do gifs where I recreate a comic scene in the toon art style, which allows me to get more creative than usual and is quite fun. It usually involves mash-ups of different backgrounds blended together. Anyone remember this?!
My most recent comic acquisition. And btw nicely executed. The tumble came out great. I only have a few issues, the others being UK #33-34.
I was thinking about the 'enhancing' element discussed in here the other day. For some reason I'd completely blanked that there is a filter in Photoshop called High Pass which I have occasionally used to sharpen up photographs. To be fair, I've never tried it on actual artwork before! But I decided to give it a go... Spot the difference?
On the second picture it looks better, not sure on the first one. I think the first looks better without high-pass.
I know it's been years since you posted these backgrounds... but thank you. I don't know what else to say they are excellent and really grab some of the fantastic work the original artists did for all of us to enjoy in a moment. Again... thank you.
I'll second that thanks for this thread. The original art is very good. I actually remember using this thread to download these images before I had a TFW2005 account! Ive used these as backgrounds in some of my projects since I've been here too. Very good work!
Thanks all! Yes all credit to those original artists back in the day. I wonder if they realise that their work is still being appreciated over a 3rd of a century later!? I've not been on the boards much lately, being extra busy in everyday life, but fingers crossed this year is going to be a better one in terms of spare time to devote to TF projects!
Yeah I only had a couple printed, years ago as backdrops for photoshoots, but they were glossy and it made getting a good shot without unwanted reflections tricky. If you can print on a nice firm card that also helps avoid creases and wrinkles etc and makes backgrounds easy to set up, as you don't have to worry about the corners coming loose and flopping down! If printing onto card is impractical, maybe spray mount your print onto card after the fact.
Right. I've been admiring Hasbro's Studio Series releases lately, and the other day managed to finally get a couple in hand (Jazz and Blurr if you're wondering). I really love the little display stands they come with (new artwork, but very faithful to the original toon art such as I post in here). Anyway, I had the notion to try and expand the idea for other recent figures. This is all thanks to HasTak's new toon accurate direction; over the last year or so I've found myself buying a lot more mainline stuff like Sky Lynx, Quint Judge, Fasttrack, Warpath, Runamuck, Cyclonus... And basically, well this is just a digital mock up (I'd have to find a way of actually creating it with card, and it's larger than A4 so not easily done), but would anyone be interested in this type of thing? Obviously this one is intended for Kingdom Warpath, and uses multiple original toon stills composited into a scene representing the episode 'Decepticon Raider in King Arthur's Court'...
You made this?! Nice! The thing I remember most about this is the following scene where Optimus tries to explain to Spidey that Gears was dead but not dead.
