I bought a C9 Snarl online a while back and was disappointed that although the joints were nice and tight and it had no scratches, one of the robot head eyes were half missing red paint. I really wanted a Snarl with fully painted eyes so I ended up buying 2 more until I got one I was happy with (below pic). I've also had the same hunt ending up with multiple Mirages, Grimlocks and Hot Spots (for a nicely painted Defensor head). Anyone else feel the same way about paint apps on robot heads?
I am extremely particular about headsculpts, which is why I skipped the main trio of Siege seekers and their oft-mispainted heads. I will obsess about the tiniest scratch or mispainted app on a headsculpt. On the body it doesn't matter as much to me, but the head has got to be perfect.
Those are mass produced figures in the 80s... If you expect perfection and care, stay away from collecting them. Those were just toys. A level of imperfection is the rule. Overspray and things like that are very common. We have major paint issues in masterpieces nowadays... just imagine how much the workers cared about those toys when they were producing them back in the days.
It always bugged me that the Seekers faces weren't painted. Some reissues did a great job repainting faces and breathing like into the toys like Wheelie, Swerve, Tailgate and Outback. Sideswipe and Encore Jazz only had optics painted but it made quite a difference. Of course Bumblebee and the Device Label retool of Optimus Prime got newly sculpted heads. I wish Tracks and Perceptor had gotten more cartoon accurate heads.
Starscream's black face, grey vents and gold aviator eyes will always take me back to 1984. I wish there were more artist depictions of it.
