Wasn't it worth 25 years of patience for better options?
Never understood the fascination and overvaluation of diecast
50 bux!? I just can’t see it??
Well I’m gonna hide me one in an area that’s not shopped a lot and comeback when he’s discounted. Lol
Hot Rod and Starscream are flooding our local stores, I bet they go on sale half price after the Holidays.
I don't think dropping the trailer was necessarily a bad idea. The price tag is a bad idea. And the lack of extras is a bad idea. If it also came with the matrix, energon axe, and Megatron accessory + right fist (from Collection 9 Starscream) for about $30 - $35 then I'd say this was a good set.
After buying Hotrod and taking out of the package, $16 is about right for it.
$50 for Prime? Hasbro is out of their minds.
Die cast doesn\'t really cost more than plastic. G1 Optimus is an extremely simple toy.
I'll get it if I ever seen it on sale just for the skinny gun.
Hot Rod was around $30 before the price slash. Now you can get Hot Rod for $13. The same might happen to Prime, but looking at how Devastator and Starscream retained their original retail price (probably due to their greater popularity and name recognition compared to Hot Rod), I'm not too sure.
Also pointing out the fact that diecast is heavy which brings up shipping costs and there is also the paint that goes into painting the diecast. For a deluxe-sized figure, G1 Prime is pretty heavy. Another reason why diecast metal was used in a lot of toys during the late 70s to the early 80s was due to the price of oil from the time period so it was actually cheaper to use diecast for a while (the later G1 toys phased out the diecast metal content).
If Toys R Us still existed in the states, these would probably have been an exclusive. Now, its just Walmart who is probably unwilling to have a bunch of old toys taking up space on shelves that few kids would be interested in (the only selling point of these G1 reissues would be nostalgia due there being better versions of these figures available online now).
What I REALLY want to make note of is that the box itself uses the US artwork yet the manual uses the JP artwork for some reason.
A single cab g1 Optimus Prime cab with no trailer or accessories for $50, is quite frankly insulting. Remember buying 25th anniversary optimus with trailer, voice box, dvd, and comic for $20 at kmart.
Looking at eBay right now, a complete in box reissue is around $80+, and the KO hovers around $40. I had handled a couple of the KOs and they seem to be pretty spotty QC wise (especially with the wonky wheels).
Yeah, an incomplete and used figure might cost significantly less but the fists (that always seem to be missing) and the rifle will set you back by $20 at least. Also, that is for a used figure that has paint scratches and looser joints, not a brand-new and minty figure.
There is also the issue of shelf space. Part of the reason why Devastator was difficult to find at physical retail was due to the gift box set taking up a significant amount of space (Walmart doesn't like this) along with Devastator's popularity. This is a good compromise since this Prime would take up a significantly smaller amount of space, making it easier for people to find them in store.
Also, looking at the long smokestacks, Hasbro might be legally selling this as a "collectible" rather than a toy due to the possible safety hazard of the smokestacks breaking off (the earlier Hasbro re-releases avoided this with the short smokestacks to the dismay of many collectors), hence the higher price. Either way, I'll see and wait for the price to decrease (or wait for a coupon deal/sale) before buying.
I think that this had to do more with the box set not selling, and the fact that this was at a K-Mart.
ill get him if I see it in stores.
With Starscream being $40 prime at $50 would seem right. He’s a bigger figure and maybe more diecast then Startscream
Trading Places pawn broker will pay 50 bucks
Granted MSRP was about $60, but you got a lot more than this weak offering
Starscream was never $40...
Y'know, what if this is just a cheap budget release for smaller Walmarts? And for the larger ones they'll do a more complete reissue with the trailer?
If $50 is the cost for the budget release, I’d hate to see what a non-budget release costs.
Also, when has that scenario EVER happened
I’d buy a trailer off eBay, but there is no guarantee the blues will match?
