Hear me out, im not a complete g1 fanatic, i really like the series, it has its good points. On that note, i beleive that G1 Optimus Prime was the best one, character wise. I mean look at the trend that recent optimus primes carry, being being kinda cold and distant, battle hardened and very morose. G1 OP showed a much greater personality and range of emotions.

    -care/friendship with his soldiers
    -care for human/innocent life
    -a great sense of humor
    -constant intrigue in human culture/history
-playful and able to have fun
    -a tough and determined warrior/commander
-able to really trash talk in battle

most of these traits have been erased in the recent incarnations of the character after beast wars and the unicron trilogy OPs used similar characters.

    thoughts?

That list basically covered most cliched attributes for all the leaders in 80s cartoon.. there were fair share of episodes having them potraying any one of those traits as the story go along.

The best was actually Animated Optimus.
The others have all been a bit bland tbh, including G1, Armada, Prime and Movieverse. Prime especially.

That kind of points out how bland and perfect G1 Prime is. He has no flaws, which ironically is in itself a flaw. He's the super, perfect good guy, and thus he has no character depth, turning him into more of a figurehead than an actual character who has emotions and more than just "super leader" personality 24/7. Hell, he didn't even get angry at anybody, especially during that one episode where the Autobots were palling around with the Decepticions.

Which Optimus had the best personality is a matter of perspective, view and opinion. Me personally, I like Movie Optimus the best, but I wouldn't say he has the absolute best personality.

The only true and uncontested best Optimus personality would be the one where every single person who watches that Optimus, every single person on the whole damn planet, agrees he has the best personality.

You guys and gals catching my drift?

I agree OP, that's why he's my favourite. He was the Superman to Megatron's Zod: a heroic Autobot with both courage and compassion, inspiring troops and viewers alike with his nobility and humour.

As much as I love G1, I feel Optimus in it was pretty much just the standard leader good guy template personality. Is that the best? I suppose at least he's not doing anything to offend. The more 'empty' or 'blank slate' he is beyond just those standard good guy leader traits the easier it is for kids to project what they need to onto him.

Well, he was and remains the prototypical Optimus Prime. All other incarnations are based off him to one degree or another.

I think what we have here is an example of the "best leader", but not necessarily the best or most in-depth characterization. The ideal leader is supposed to be perfect, infallible... of course that's not true, but that's how he or she is presented to the troops. I guess we got the Autobot pov in G1... nothing wrong with that.

Animated was a great take on a different point in Optimus' life. Great characterization.

This is the one I find most absent in recent versions of Optimus. All we have now is him wanting to finish the fight, it doesn't really seem to matter that they are on earth. Most modern Primes (animated excluded) seem angry, aloof and distant. His troops respect him, but they don't generally seem to like him.

I cared about G1 Prime as a kid because he inspired me. The way that he was written was often corny, but at the heart of it he was a good guy, who cared for his people and ours. Yes he may have been stereotypical for the time, but those stereotypes have stuck with me far more than many modern heroes.

We're told that modern Primes are inspirational, but how often do they actually achieve it? Tearing your enemies face off isn't very heroic is it? Especially when no remorse for having to take such drastic action seems to be present.

to me the most important traits were his humor and having fun which you dont see as much of now

the closest we got of that in TFP was the snowball thing from "scrapheap"

    Oh my god this.

I love Optimus having an interest in Earth Culture. Hell in my continuity before he steps up to become a leader he mainly is a philopsher and a xenobiologist.

Optimus watching soap opreas. Oh what i would give to see that again.

I remember him getting angry at Brawn for giving Perceptor crap about not being a true fighter/warrior. The same with Cliffjumper when he was questioning Mirage's allegiance. That's about as angry as you'd see him get, though.

anyone remember when Optimus acted like a dick in one episode.

when Grimlock apologizes to Optimus about betraying him and optimus is all like "The Decepticons have been defeated.....for now,"

I find that scene so funny.

That felt forced, though. G1 Prime was legitimately funny at times.

And if I recall correctly Raph never got that snowball. G1 Optimus would have brought one back. ;)

What about in More Than Meets the Eye (the first few episodes of G1)? The Dececpticons got away and he was pissed. "I said I'm fine!" "Sideswipe, give me your Rocketpack. Now!"

I think his personality was it its best during that three parter.

Animated Optimus was a great Hot Rod.
