I was watching a documentary on classic movie monster maker Ray Harryhausen last night, and it discusses at some length the number of movies that include homages to his work. While Transformers didn't pop up, I could help but think that the ammonite/nautilus scene in Mysterious Island seems like a pretty clear cut inspiration for Hot Rod and Kup's encounter with the giant squid on Quintessa.
