Does anyone have information about the origin of the series 2 minibots with white border?

    It's just a packaging variation

I have just checked AFA's population report on all series 2 minibots and was surprised to see that white borders are more common than I thought. The columns are normal/with patch/with white borders:

    Beachcomber 45, 5 w/ patch, 7 w. borders
    Cosmos 17, 2 w/ patch, 10 w. borders
    Powerglide 21, 3 w/ patch, 10 w. borders
    Seaspray 31, 1 w/ patch, 10 w. borders
    Warpath 18, 1 w/ patch, 7 w. borders

Judging from the ratio whiteborder/normal it's almost 1/2 except for Seaspray and Beachcomber. I wonder how many reissues have made their way in that list :)  .. It looks like the ones with patch are much rarer.

Were the ones with white borders sold as soon as 1985 or were they sold later? It's strange that only the series 2 minibots had this variation.
