I just won this one off Ebay and that chest plate thing does not want to open. I forced it enough, but I'm not going any further and end up breaking it. I really don't remember it being like this when I had it at 14. Open/Close=Easy Fix/workaround/or just leave it alone??
I've had a few that were a bear to open. I would not force it. You will probably break it but you will without a doubt stress it. Leave it alone IMO.
Mine's basically stuck, and I put just the slightest beginning of a stress mark in it trying to open it, so I now I leave it alone. Oh well... I have other HMs I can check out thestats gimmick on.
Don't remember having trouble as a kid, but a couple of months ago I tried to open it and damn near broke it! Leave it be man! Checking his stats under G1 resources is lots more easier.
If you force it, it will break. I broken one that one once and learned never to open any chest panels of hardhead anymore. And I see a lot of hardheads with broken chest panels in junk bins and at toy shows. So don't do it.

Well I'm glad I didn't break it trying to open it right now before i checked on here. i didn't even get a stress mark on it. No one has a fix for this problem huh? like someone who broke it and see where exactly the problem is...
I once sent a G1 Hardhead to someone who wanted to paint it as a HISS Tank with that snake 3P headmaster. I assured him that the chest panel was intact and tried it out to make sure. El snappo. I wish I could remember the dude because he said he had an idea to fix it. You're welcome for all the help that was .
I still have my G1 Hardhead, from when I was little, and the chest panel never wanted to open for me. Just DON'T do it!!!
