This is an experiment of mine, which spawned from another discussion. I'm mainly directing this at fans of G1, because I've already seen the options of movie fans, and it's...basically what you'd expect from hardcore movie fans.

Okay, I'm wondering, do you think the Cybertron Games have a better general reaction than Bay's movies? (And by "generally", I mean people who are more or less unbiased to a certain version of Transformers, *AKA "everyday people" to us more hardcore fans) I mean, when I look through comments and responses on "neutral" (non-TF based) sites such as YouTube, Facebook, ect, it seems like the games receive pretty good reaction by both non fans, and loose fans, while the movies only receive mediocre, to negative response. This leads me to believe that most people prefer WFC/FOC.

I would also like to mention I'm not talking about money made. The movies obviously made a lot more money than the games, but they also have much more merchandise, and much better advertising, and big movies generally make more money than video games do. Plus, there are quite a few things in life that make money, but people don't necessarily like.

Also, I realize this thread is incredibly meta. A discussion about a discussion.

I certainly like the games better. It has a better design aesthetic for the Transformers, and it's a superior medium of story telling

I don't know that it's true that movies necessarily make more money than video games.

But anyway...frankly, I don't know too many non-TF-fans that even played the WfC and FoC games.

Yet, it doesn't get as much press...Or toys for that matter.

I haven't played the games, but based on the pics/screen caps, I do like the aesthetics a lot better than that of the movieverse's.

The games seem to be generally well accepted from G1 fans. I, for one, certainly prefer them to the movies' aesthetic.

I quite disagree with the poster who stated games are a superior form of storytelling, but as badly written as Bay's films are, I think this might be an exception... :)

$5 ticket price for 3 hours of explosions and some trailers beforehand or $60 for Unreal/Quake-lite? I think the movies are better. And they reach a wider audience.

I think many of those interested in the WFC/FOC games are already interested in Transformers. Add to that you're specifically calling out to G1 fans, you're likely to get skewed answers.

How on Earth can video games be better at story telling than movies? Especially these games?

To actually address the question and state how I believe the general population feels about the games and movies, rather than address my own bias, I don't think either would be considered better or worse statistically. I do however feel that the movies elicit a stronger response from people than the games do.

While box office takings Vs game sales will never give a useful result, its clear that the movies enjoy a greater market and broader exposure. This however, is offset by the polarisation of opinion from those who watch it. While the Cybertron games may be confined to a smaller market, they're less likely to be considered offensive, or 'Everything that's wrong with the artform, currently'.

In short I'm stating that the problem is difficult to quantify, as there may well be more people who strongly enjoy the movies, there are also more people who strongly dislike them (Yes I'm talking general public). The Cybertron games are benign by comparison and enjoy critical praise, despite having a smaller audience.

Because they are up against Bayformers?

If you took a shit on a piece of paper and smeared words on it you'd get a better script than all 3 movies.

Lol, that's about it. Anyone notice Bay's reusing the same general plot each time?
"Humans hate the Autobots and want them dead/leave the planet, bad guys attack with some ancient relic and the Autobots have to save the world and prove themselves to humanity, only to have it all start over for the next film."

Bayformers at least have a beginning, middle, and end. These games have excuses, not plots.

Interestingly enough, I've never played the games either, (except for WFC on the Nintendo DS). Everything I know about it comes from TFWiki, and cutscenes and gameplay on YouTube, which is really just as good, because I'm not really into video games, and it's more like watching a movie.

The games knock spots off the films. They are far more entertaining and you get more for your money from them. I will happily play wfc and foc time and time again, whereas revenge of the fallen I've watched maybe three times and however much I try, still think it was written by a two year old.

The Cybertron games play like interactive season finales from the 80s cartoon. I would have much rather seen a movie based on them than the live-action films.

I don't know that they have better stories to tell, and they aren't flawless...but they are fun, respectful of the spirit of the franchise, and (more importantly) they don't offend my brain.

I'm a fan since '84 and my personal ranking by enjoyment is:

    1) Bay 1
    2) WfC/FoC
    3) Bay 2/3

I do like the first movie Autobot designs but the rest of the movie designs are mostly forgettable. I thought the WfC and FoC designs were a nice blend of G1 with a bit of the movie aesthetics thrown in.
