In the g1 transformers episode "roll for it" shockwave and megatron have a brief conversation . shockwave actually mutters to himself he hopes Megatron would die in a space bridge accident. This means cartoon shockwaves "perfect soldier status" was ironic foreshadowing and secretly he was becoming the same as his comic counterpart

at about 4 minutes in, the camera focuses on shockwaves face as he sarcastically says " have a safe journey megatron" to himself

I believe Shockwave was being sincere in his well-wishes to Megatron. Everywhere else in the cartoon he's depicted as an ardent supporter of Megatron.

Yeah, Shockwave always sounded overly dramatic in the G1 cartoon.

It's kind of weird, cartoon Shockwave is supposed to be based on the early character bio portraying him as a scyophant, so that one moment doesn't really sit in with the rest of his cartoon characterization - although it can be easily explained with the voice actor getting it wrong, either deliberately or accidentally, and he really was meant to be honest about it, but instead came off as sarcastic.

haha no no, that means the writers WANTED it to go that way, but were stopped by producers.

I think Shockwave had deeper feelings for Megatron than that!

I believe he was sincere. He kind of had a sardonic tone to everything he said, though.

The G1 toon didn't have that much depth to it. Although the premise suggested is the prefered way for me to view Shockwave.

I've noticed this too. Maybe they were going in that direction and just felt to lazy for a continuing story.

I have made this same observation.

I had also heard, some time ago now, that the writers did indeed want toon Shocky to follow suit with comic Shocky, but since he wasn't going to be a toy that was available in Japan, his appearances were scaled back and then there just wasn't any point. Besides, they already had Starscream (and just about every other Decepticon) to be the conniving traitor, having Shockwave be one too would have been redundant.

I actually liked the fact that Shockwave was a very loyal soldier in the cartoon. I don't remember the specific scene here, but there could be other reasons as well that Shockwave might have been pissed at Megatron at that moment.

Yeah, I like that toon Soundwave and Shockwave were loyal to Megatron. In the comics every Decepticon wanted to undermine him it seemed. No wonder, though. Comic book Megatron was an ineffectual, ranting, raving lunatic.
