I’ve been watching reviews, and unfortunately the finished game seems to play just as uninspired as the demo felt to me. While playing the demo, I remember thinking there had to be more to it that hadn’t been implemented yet, but I was wrong. Graphics and animation are good, but the gameplay is just far too basic. I love beat em ups, and the developers don’t seem to understand that the best ones usually offer a variety of moves for different situations (the original Double Dragon, a 35 year old game, offers more move variety than this one…that just won’t cut it).
Played the first level last night and honestly, it's not bad. It's a 90s style beat em up that costs $25, I'm not going to be terribly picky. Gameplay honestly seems about on par with some of my favorite games of the genre.
If it had more playable Joes, I might consider it, but for now, I'll wait for a larger discount sale.
The review I watched seemed to indicate the same as did the gameplay footage I watched. It looks too much like a lazy Beats of Rage Pak. Yeah, you got the pixel assets, but what else? Audio cues also still seem non-existent. For an 80's IP, it should be literally dripping with them. Is there a "Yo Joe!" while playing that I'm missing? Edit: the old arcade Konami rail shooter game is oozing Joe from corner to corner. The audio especially is obnoxiously Joe cues and effects. That kind of energy needs to be here and from what I'm watching it isn't.
Totally forgot to mention this, but you covered it nicely. Part of why Shredder’s Revenge worked so well was all the callbacks and references, and the love shown the IP by bringing back all 4 original VAs. Yes, Wrath of Cobra has some references, but it could have had so much more. It’s almost a crime they didn’t get Michael Bell on board. Maybe have some comic references too, like cameos by Quinn, Doctor Venom, Fred, etc.
I really want Konami to get the license back long enough to port that arcade game to modern platforms
It's not as polished as Shredder's Revenge, but I think it's pretty fun. I've played the first 3 levels so far and I'm enjoying it
Honestly, I hear "GI Joe game," I expect either a tactics game, or a Run & Gun along the lines of Contra. Tactical RTS fits thanks to the nature of the IP. But Contra also fits, too. So...Honestly a Beat'Em'Up just doesn't fit the brand in my head.
I’ll get it once it has a deeper discount. These types of games can get repetitive really quickly and I think this game especially doesn’t handle that well. The sprite work is impressive though.
