it will probably be retooled to make him talk or a flashback heavy movie to provide the actor plenty of instances to talk and be all super quippy and funny.

Not to mention both movies doing the exact same thing, and having 99% of the Joes get killed before they can do anything.

Yes, I would like to see the Gi Joe special forces team actually be a special forces team. And, actually accomplish shit. As much as I love Gi Joe Retaliation, it is a shitty Gi Joe film, just like the Rise of Cobra. They are both terrible Joe films.

Street Fighter The movie is a better Gi Joe film.

I like the 1st joe film than the 2nd.
The 1st one feels more GI Joe than the 2nd.
The 2nd film is like tailor-fit for The Rock alone.
It's like it's more a Fast & Furious Dwayne Johnson flick rather than your average Joe film.

it's less CGI and they just used Snake Eyes and friends and Bruce Willis as bait to lure in movie viewers.

So, what you're saying is...After this, we need two more crappy films from meh directors/writers, and then the company can greenlight a film that doesn't know if it wants to be a reboot or not, but will restore some confidence in the brand by finally getting a competent director who cares about the franchise they're making a movie about.

You’re absolute right Snake Eyes only works “in” the GI Joe team. He contrasts against every other brightly colored often chatty enthusiastic team member. I hope this just means Snake Eyes is the star of the movie but you get Stalker and another Joe or two to play against him. Stalker, Scarlet one other.

"I got sand in my shoe." The writing on the Sunbow cartoon was better than it gets credit for.

The first movie was a little more like the Sunbow cartoon in its wackiness, while the second attempted to use more elements from the comics and felt more like the Renegades cartoon. Neither was great. Neither was even good. For all the problems with the Bay TF movies, Bay did a billion times better of a job adapting the material into live action. The GI Joe movies succeed at nothing they attempted.

I get that the public's relation to the military is not what it was in the 1980s, so the filmmakers struggle with trying to make a military movie that features as little military action as possible. But they are selling the concept short. I don't think there has been a moment in human history when people would be more receptive to a story about fighting global terrorism. GI Joe could be a slam dunk with audiences around the world who are sick and tired of terrorism if the filmmakers would stop pussyfooting around and actually make a GI Joe movie. It could be cathartic.

Knowing too much about Snake Eyes kind of hurts the character. Back when it was the silent issue Snake Eyes was really cool because he was still such a mysterious character. But by the time his name is splashed in huge letters on the covers the character felt kind of eh because we knew too much and he had become too much of an unstoppable force. He's great when the Joes are in a situation where only an almost superhuman ninja commando can save the day but every GI Joe mission doesn't seem like a situation where you have to have Snake Eyes for the good guys to make it out.

Just hope it's a total reboot and not another attempt at saving the previous film. GI Joe 2 not being allowed to reboot really hurt that film so perhaps the current leadership at Paramount will decide not to try to save their franchises at any cost but reboot when things need to be rebooted.

The more I think about it the more I come to the conclusion that a successful GI Joe movie series (that stays somewhat true to the source material) is just not possible. Not anymore. I don't think the foreign box office (which is necessary these days) will support a movie that's neck deep in the US military like Joe would be.

I mean, lets face it, I think there's a reason the TF franchise has had much more longevity than GI Joe. TF is much more acceptable and marketable.

I don't know, they could rework GI Joe as an international team...But then it stops being GI Joe...

While that is certainly part of the reason. Another part is that GI Joe never really had it's "Beast Wars". Hasbro played it safe and never took that big gamble to move things forward.

Can't say I feel sorry for GI Joe's current state, as it has been given more chances than any concurrent Hasbro franchise.

Well, it was always an international team in the UK. When the original Marvel comic series was relettered and repackaged for UK audiences, a lot of the cast got reworked to be from outside the US. Flint's new backstory had him born in Lincoln, England, for example, while Lady Jaye became Irish. Meanwhile, other characters, like Duke, remained American. (I own an entire run of Marvel UK's Action Force, including the UK Transformers issues after they combined the two magazines, in addition to the entire US Marvel GI Joe run and Special Missions)

So I can live with the idea of GI Joe being reimagined as an international team. I've had 30 years to get used to the idea. I could do without them being tied to the ineffectual UN like they did in the Paramount movies, but whatever.

See, I don't agree with this.

I mean, yeah, if you're going to try to sell American imperialism, that's a tough putt. But so many countries around the world have now suffered horrific and senseless terrorist attacks, especially in Europe, that I think there are a lot of people in all markets who would enjoy seeing terrorism get a punch in the mouth.

Well I had a long response typed but it got eaten due to site errors - anyway to me the problem with GI Joe vs. modern terror is (1) how do you do it without being racist and (2) modern terrorism is very asymmetric - small groups, basic supplies/weapons, etc. Nothing like the somewhat even fight that was portrayed in the old cartoon.

COBRA is (initially) a homegrown terrorist organization -- started by a White American, that should cover your (1).

But anyways, I don’t think G.I. Joe is the vehicle to showcase the real world fight against terrorism. It’s still cartoon/comicbook villainy, and it should stay that way. Personally, I want a Joe movie set in the ‘80s that embraces all the scifi antics of the cartoon.

Actually I would argue they did attempt to have their BW with GI Joe Extreme, but it didn't work for Joe the way it worked for Transformers.

As far as this movie is concerned... I'm a HUGE FUCKING SNAKE-EYES FAN. However, I really don't care about this film as we really haven't even had a GOOD GI Joe film yet. Spin Offs are things you do to a successful franchise not one that still hasn't found it's feet. Also, I think it'll be a mistake if it truly is a solo film the same way Bumblebee is where Bee doesn't interact with any other Autobots. Snake-Eyes is really at his best when he has others to bounce off of like Stalker, Scarlett, Flint... hell even Kamakura and Jinx would be better than him being totally solo.

That said I think Hasbro'd be better off just trying to make a successful cartoon or live action tv show where they only have to worry about the US market instead of trying to make GI Joe acceptable to get that foreign box office (especially China). Let's face it... with today's political climate since 9/11 it's going to be a lot harder to get the rest of the world on board with a franchise whose mythos is balls deep in the US military. Sure, you could attempt to make it an international team (which the first film attempted and failed miserably at), but then you might as well call it Action Force. And how do you handle characters in that case? I mean... I guess you could go the first film route by turning guys like Breaker and Heavy Duty into foreigners, but that hardly went down well with the fandom. There's also all the actual foreign characters from overseas versions of the line you could tap (Quiver comes to mind), but then I fear inserting to many of those characters will score you a Star-Lord inspired "who?". Especially from anyone, but the most hardcore fans.
