Okay, so I know it's supposed to go into effect on June 26, but my question is whether that covers non-pre-built PC's? I want to build a gaming computer, but I might wait longer if I can buy Vista Home Premium and get Windows 7 free in a month. I just don't know if buying Vista Home Premium by itself (instead of in a pre-built comp package) would qualify? As far as a PC, I'm thinking about building the "Rank 2" PC from this site: rabb1t's space - system recommendations Think that's a good build? Anywhere with cheaper plans?
To be honest, I'd wait for Windows 7 to hit the market and be tweaked. I wouldn't be an early adopter at this point. XP took a little while to stand on it's own, and look at it now. Vista, not quite as reliable as XP, but it's getting better since the inclusion of SP1. 7 is flat out brand new, no Service Packs, nothing. You seriously want the bugs and kinks worked out before investing any real money into it. It's just sensible.
Okay. I thought that Windows 7 (from what people have said) is basically Vista Fixed. And if I was gonna pay $100 for an OS, why not get the newer one? I'm not the type to ever upgrade, so I'll likely stay with whatever I buy now, which means XP would be getting pretty old and outdated, which was a concern. Not to mention that Direct X10 doesn't support XP from what I understand.
I'm using 7 right now, and so far my only bug is getting to dual boot with XP. Otherwise it works great, uses all the Vista versions of the programs and all my stuff works, even my webcam. Honestly I'm happy with it. I'd say go for it but that's just me, *shrug*.
Okay. So assuming I WANT Win 7, does anyone know if the freebie deal applies to purchases of just the Vista OS after June 26 or would I have to buy a whole pre-built system (I won't do that)? And thanks to all who are commenting!
no clue, all i know is even if you do get Windows7, it wont be the final version, only the release candidate...
I'm gonna have to agree on this one. I'm dual booting win7 and vista and win7 wins hands down vs vista even with vista sp2 installed. I actually think that win7 should have been a service pack to vista but the name vista is just bad for MS so I get that. I will definitely be doing the upgrade to win7 when it comes out.
Well, I'm guessing that since nobody has really answered my question (one person might have, but I'm not sure if he was referring to something else I said or my original question) that Microsoft hasn't said if just buying a copy of Vista Home Premium will grant access to Windows 7 too (once released).
The reason nobody has answered is because nobody knows. It's just a big fat question mark as to how Windows 7 will be handled on pre-built machines. I'd, however, spend the extra money to have the disk. @ AnimatedFan: I assume you have no idea what Windows 7 TRULY is if all you have to say is "There's no fixes and patches, so wait, because it's a new OS." Windows 7 is Vista "Fixed". The reason they call it "Windows 7", is so they can shed the Vista name, because people have the idea drilled in their minds "Windows Vista is crap." For me, I'd buy Vista Ultimate and get the upgrade, so that I can have EVERYTHING.
Okay. I kinda figured that was the case. I'll just wait it our for another month and see what happens. Though I don't think I'll spend the money on Vista Ultimate instead of Vista Home Premium.
QFT, windows 7 isn't slated for release till January 2010. which i know microsoft isn't one for keeping it's release dates but they have to come close to this one. Acer has announced a new PC coming out in october and accadently leaked info that the PC will come pre-loaded with windows 7. which if u know microsoft, they provide a FREE upgrade to new version of windows if u buy the previous version within 3 months of it's release date. so as of now the tenative release is january 2010.
