Coming to theaters on December 11, 2020 is Free Guy, a sci-fi comedy written by Zak Penn (The Avengers, Ready Player One) and directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum trilogy, Real Steel), starring Ryan "Deadpool" Reynolds, Jodie Comer (Villanelle in Killing Eve), Joe Keery (Steve in Stranger Things), Lil Rei Howery (Bobby Carmichael in The Carmichael Show) and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit).
I could have sworn there was already a thread for this when this LOL worthy promo clip showed up a few months ago... And poster...
I typically love this type of meta-humour, so my interest is piqued at the very least. Stranger than Fiction is somewhat similar in premise and one of my favourite movies (also one of the few things I can stand Will Ferrell in, as I'm not a fan of his usual brand of low-brow comedy).
Obviously there is no real trailer for this yet, but this might be one of my most anticipated movies next year based on the premise alone. It’s basically about a person who realizes they are in a Grand Theft Auto game. That’s just brilliant and has a lot of comedic potential with Ryan Reynolds starring as well.
From the studio that brought you Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, twice: GTA Online the Movie but the NPC goes rogue? Should be good.
LOL was that "twice" bit from Fox or Reynolds? Anyway, it looks sort of fun. Sort of an action video game version of "The Truman Show", except the hero isn't a video game hero but an NPC.
So this is basically Lego movie meets Truman Show? Set in what seems to be an MMO version of Grand Theft Auto? I do wish they would have used some MMO with actual NPC interactions. I mean Guy seems to be barely anything but a background prop, and these types of games have little to no NPC dialogue. A fantasy game would have been funnier where the NPCs keep asking the adventurers in town to bring them 10 wolf pelts every day without knowing why and what to do with all that junk. Is that a jab at Disney remakes? Or they really worked on those? If not... can they even do that as a pretend without Disney suing them?
