Just saw this article about a flashlight that "pulls a megatron," and transforms into a sub machine gun. There's a bit of info and a demo video at the link below.
That thing is damn slick. Also, I like how the rep talks about its uses for a civilian.

Theres something like that in "Robocop 2", The little drug dealer kid had a blue little box with a handle on it, when the OCP cops came he opened it to become a small sub-machine gun.

Oh geez. Why would you need to carry a automatic weapon while walking a dog? The only use I could see for that is against looters during a blackout.

I don't really see the point, beyond "neat" factor. A pistol is smaller, can be made ready quicker, and is just less cumbersome. Just learn to frikken aim.
