I'd like a redo of my personal fave 3X: Blitzwing.

Looking back at the G1 version, it just needed longer arms and more articulation. If it had that, it beat the classics version.

BTW why did they rerelease the G1 Astrotrain in F'ed up colors what the shizzle was that about? I'm fine with alt colors but bright clashing ridiculousness.

It's an armored train. I get not liking the fact that they changed it from an old steam locomotive, but why is there a constant need to put the word train in quotes? I was ignorant of them prior to someone else on this board pointing them out a while back, but I think it's kind of awesome and makes sense for Transformers like Sentinel and Astrotrain to become something like this.

I will admit it's a gimmick figure, but compare it to how slavishly G1 literally everything else from G1 has been adhered to.

Just seems way out of place to me. Moreso in that they nailed the bot mode for the most part, even, but couldn't work in a compartment in a transforming box.

Well, yeah, but it also was a 1980's toy - it was rare that a toy would get more articulation than was necessary just to transform it.

I still think the train wheels badly needed some paint apps to highlight them, due to being so small.

It seems so strange for Whirl and Roadbuster to have happened as raw G1 upgrades and then never happen again, since Astrotrain would have been perfect for that type of upgrade.

Armored trains don't have giant conning towers on them. Kinda makes it hard to go through tunnels and low-hanging bridges.

Then it's an unrealistic armored train. So? It looks cool.

They're not in quotations because they're bad, far from it. They're in quotations because they stretch the definition, which is done so because Aviation has had a drastic increase in royalty fees for using planes and, you guessed it, shuttles. Also, the train's been updated to make it easier to engineer. What were you expecting; Toyworld Evila Star levels of difficulty?

Not that that's a bad thing. I think that toy is awesome, floppy wings aside.

I was expecting hot chocolate with marshmallows from Candy Mountain delivered by a unicorn with butterfly wings.

i might go so far as to say that G1 Astrotrain is the most successful Triple-changer EVER done, in that, he has 3 credible, realistic alt-modes (<--this being key in that "realistic" modes are always going to require a greater challenge then "futuristic whatsits") that are darn near perfect (basically the shuttle engines on the the back of the train are the only whiff) AND look completely different ~ even Blitzing, who's quite decent, still has the entire turret hanging off the bottom of the jet mode.

For what's working here on this Astrotrain, after seeing him upside down i gotta say the lack of work to do ANYTHING with the arms in shuttle mode is pretty disappointing.

There's a pretty big gap in between Evila Star and Titans Return Astrotrain in terms of design difficulty. Toyworld's offering has a borderline absurd number of moving parts, occasionally to its own detriment. It also has to make all of its white parts either face in or down after transformation so that the whole toy appears black.

TR A-Train's major design challenge was how to make one altmode double the length of the other, which basically required them to make his robot mode do the splits.

I actually really like the shape of the shuttle mode. The color layout isn't as nice as Sentinel's (well of render Sentinel, we'll see how different the red and orange are on the retail version) but it has an Ark like bulk. I would hardly ever keep him in shuttle mode unless it was midway between train and bit modes, because I don't care about Astrotrain because he turns into a shuttle.

But to the rest of your point, I have to agree. The primary things that need to be changed from G1 Astrotrain's altmodes are more detail go the train mode dealing with the suspicious train-shaped box on the front of the shuttle. I don't really look at the thrusters sticking out of the back of the train a negative, exactly.

I think scaling it up (say, to Masterpiece size?) Could work wonders to fix those issues, as the "box" is just formed by a couple folding panels.

The point is that to make a proper G1 Astrotrain upgrade that's accurate to the cartoon or toy, you need to go complex. This bypasses the need for a nightmare transformation.

THANK YOU, this is what is bothering me, just not doing anything with the arms AND shoulders. It strikes me as lazy and breaks suspension.

Aren't we forgetting CHUG Springer and Octane? Springer had a semi-realistic helicopter and a realistic (albiet Mad Max inspired) car mode. As for Octane, his jet mode was realistic and his truck mode was okay.

Hate to say it, but G1 toys (as good as they are) just don't do as well.

Well, except in the diecast department.
