In your world, what role does First Aid play? is he extraneous because of ratchet?

I always saw First Aid as a doctor for the species that the transformers come across, Humans, Nebulans, Etc. Ratchet was just a doctor for transformers

Why can't there be more than one doctor? There is Fixit too by the way and Hoist is kind of a doctor.
I imagine the Autobots have loads more doctors, i mean all those Paradron Medics have to make a living on Cybertron after Rodimus blew up their planet :p
I cant see Cybertron being home to just a handfull of Autobot and Decepticon soldiers. To me there are at the very least a few million Cybertronians on and of planet so it makes sense to me that there are quite a few doctors, cops etc...

No no, you're right. In a war against two factions of the same species, one doctor will do.

I like there being more than one doctor or medic on each side even if there is some overlap in functionality. You can have a medic to stabilize wounds on the battlefield, a doctor for serious operations, a 'medical maintenance man' for routine checkups, and so on. I like extending this to other functions like scientist, engineer, espionage, etc. with different characters having different specialties inside a general field. So you have a weapons engineer and a metallurgist instead of a do-everything scientist.

In a lot of the fiction, it seems the Autobots do this specialization better than the Decepticons. Probably due to more screen time.

All the other Autobots are superfluous because Optimus Prime is already fighting against the Decepticons.

Never had Ratchet as a kid. First Aid was my medic.

Incidentally, Scrapper had to be my Decepticon medic since I never had Hook (and he was just a surgeon)...

My city doesn't bother with paramedics because they figured, 'shit, we already have a surgeon, what's the point?'

I see First Aid as a battlefield medic, while Ratchet is the chief surgeon.

Wheeljack was often helping to fix up Autobots too, but I guess I always thought Ratchet was the main doctor, and First Aid was kind of a field medic.

First Aid is more or less Ratchet's understudy in my eyes thanks to MTMTE.

First Aid gets to be the ranking medic on whatever planet Ratchet is not on.

It kind of depends. I got the impression in G1 that First Aid was better at treating the 'natives' of wherever they were; something about the Protectobots in G1 (mostly the comics) always kinda gave me the vibe they specialized way more in protecting local organisms from the effects of the war, so First Aid was gonna be a better medic for local organics.

That said, in IDW he seems to just be a good doctor who wants to help, the same way most doctors would be. Admittedly I find Hoist a little more redundant than Ratchet, but someone on the boards forever ago described them as being two different kinds of doctors; Ratchet is more of a general practitioner whereas Hoist would be more like a physical therapist or something.

First Aids an EMT/First Responder. It's his job to get to the wounded and do a quick fix until he can get them to an appropriate medical facility. I would say he could be seen as a battlefield medic, but given that he is a pacifist, I don't think the analogy would work there all that well.

I mean, he wouldn't actually have to fight if he was a battlefield medic.

I know, but I've always though of him as the guy who hated violence in general, even if he does not partake in it. He wants lives to be preserved, not taken.

All the more reason for him to be saving lives where they're most at risk.

I know of battlefield medics who'd object to that. Anyway, his name suggests his role so there's that, and he was a 'pacifist' in the cartoon for the sake of Plot, the rest of team could have done with him being a left-fist, as was suggested earlier.
I prefer the heavily-armed, presumably neurotic guy you'd think would be faster given his alt-mode from the Tech-Specs.
