I watched a lot of Pokémon* when I first started studying Japanese. I didn't understand much of the dialogue, but I sure remember what they look like. :p

*I watched a lot of everything, actually -- every anime I could get my hands on, regardless of genre. Ironically enough, the only anime I couldn't stand was Transformers. The Japanese shows are truly the worst anime has to offer.

That's impressive, mastering a different language via watching TV.

Interesting. Is Transformers as popular in Japan as in US?

It's how most of us learn to communicate -- we just don't realize it when we're kids. ;)

Only Makoto Shinkai films, and only to get laid. Show a Japanese girl 5 Centimeters Per Second, and she will sleep with you every time.

Difficult to compare, really. Robot toys represent a much larger part of the action figure industry here in Japan, but TakaraTomy doesn't produce nearly as many figures as Hasbro does. Owing to the smaller population, Japan represents a considerably smaller retail market, yet we get a lot more Masterpiece figures than North America does. Less kids, but more collectors.

Same thing with Transformers-related media. The TV shows are aired in Japan, the movies are shown in Japanese theaters, but science-fiction is consumed by a significantly smaller portion of the population than in the US. Thus, the average American can at least recognize a Transformer when they see it; the average Japanese assumes it's a Gundam. :redface2:
