Here is the article. This was triggered hot off the heals from the Donald Sterling fiasco with the NBA.

Please do not discuss politics on this matter.

As a minority, I do not find it offensive. I find it the in situations like this, the people that is calling out being offensive are the people that are not of the targeted ethnicity and think it's offending them.

Yeah, you're not going to be able to separate politics from this issue. Just isn't going to happen when the articles is about Senators signing a letter.

On topic though, I couldn't care less whether they keep the name or change. And my ancestors were Cherokee that traveled the Trial of Tears. I really think few Native Americans find the name as insulting as these ultra-PC representatives would like us to believe. It's political grand-standing.

Considering the state of the franchise and the season they just had, that might not be such a bad idea, heh.

OK, so they can't have "Redskin", "Blackskin", "Whiteskin", and "Yellowskin".

Plenty of colors left on the palette....

("Foreskin" is probably cut off that list as well?)

I don't like the name, not because it's racist, which it isn't, it's just a stupid name for a football team IMO :p

lol, here's a political issue, don't talk politics, though...

...so many people reason this out through such a small scope, their personal views, not the views through everyone...it doesn't matter whether you get offended by it or not, it matters whether any person could legitimately be offended by such a team name as "redskin"...the answer is yes, people can be legitimately offended by the name because it is based off offensive racist views of native americans...

...they need to get rid of the Cleveland Indians, as well...both teams suck, but, it's a slap in the face of a country that is supposed to be a leader in diversity.

That simply isn't the case here. Putting aside the fact that a person doesn't have to be a member of the group being disparaged to be justifiably offended (I am, for instance, offended by the way various programs portray women despite not being a woman myself) ..This change has been demanded or at least supported by every Native American advocacy group I'm aware of. As a group, Natives tend to consider the term offensive and derogatory.

Regardless, it's not appropriate. If I were to call my sports team the Denver African-Americans or the Cincinnati Asian People, most people wouldn't exactly be offended but it's still not a great idea. And that's using terms nobody could possibly take issue with. Redskin is not in the same category.

It's more like calling my team the New York Crackers and having my logo be a white guy doing something stereotypically white. I dunno, like putting too much mayonnaise on a sandwich or something. Doesn't matter. Anyway, most white people I know aren't actually offended by the term "cracker," or the idea that we might enjoy mayo more than other races.. but that doesn't change the fact that the term itself is generally intended to be derogatory and a terrible name for a sports team. Probably something we, as a society, should discourage. Make illegal? No, hell no. But discourage? Oh yes.

Finally, it's a little misleading to suggest "it's mostly people who aren't Native Americans getting offended by it." Of course it is, there are less than three million full-blooded Natives (and a further three million of mixed heritage) remaining in all of North America. That's less than 1% of the population of the United States. Of course it's going to be mostly non-natives talking about it, most of the natives are slightly too dead to vote. Similarly: It's generally not mentally handicapped people getting upset about the word "******ed" either, but it's still not a nice thing to call people.

You're not going to be able to separate discussions of race from it either.

Ehhh, it's pretty racist. I say time to change, though I appreciate that fans want to maintain tradition. In the end, though, it's just a game.

Given that one of the local schools around me also has their sports teams named the Redskins and, as far as I know, aren't doing to change that name anytime soon, I can't see this really gaining traction. If anything, this is pure overreaction, just like the time the government tried to change french fries to 'freedom fries' after France wouldn't help invade Iraq following 9/11.

I'm a Redskins fan. Love the team and I hope the name never changes. I never heard the name as a negative growing up and I grew up in DC and heard a lot of stuff. NFL is the only sport I really follow. If they change the name, I would just stop watching. That would free up my Sundays. There are other things they need to be focusing on.
