Last poll of the year, people. Time to go out with a :bay

What was your favourite animated adaptation of a live-action film?
Category:Television programs based on films - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For me, it’d have to be a cross between BEETLEJICE, THE ADDAMS FAMILY and THE PINK PANTHER.

BEETLEJUICE was one of the best animated shows I ever saw. The series more or less follows the same storyline of a trickster ghost besieging the worlds of the living and the dead, but with enough alterations (Beetlejuice a more lovable rogue, being Lydia’s best friend, removing the Maitlands) to keep it engaging.

The show is not only wild, but filled with clever puns: whenever BJ says a simile it comes true (there is something up his sleeve, literally), and even his home the Netherworld is rewritten as the Neitherworld. The Neitherworld itself, far from being the macabre world of the dead, is a vibrant and colorful carnival world filled with Gothic creations. It was a great and fairly original show, and it gets my vote.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY too was sweet. It was an unlikely but well-done combo of the family-friendly 1960s sitcom and the 1990s macabre feature films.

I saw THE PINK PANTHER cartoon long before I saw the Peter Sellers films. So, naturally if perhaps unfairly, I found Freleng’s stylish pantomimes far superior to Edwards and Sellers’ work (which however are better than the recent Steve Martin films).

Special mention though must be made of THE MASK and SAMURAI 7.

Jim Carrey’s classic trilogy – DUMB & DUMBER, THE MASK and ACE VENTURA - were all adopted into animated series, but I put THE MASK on the poll because it was the most outrageous and fun of the three. The idea of an insane superhero who could do just about anything – from saving the city to partying all night – was a lot of fun, and got a whole lot of slag past the radar. There was an infamous episode that involved a stripper who tied a stack of dynamite to her body and tried to blow her lover up...

As for SAMURAI 7, it was basically Kurosawa’s classic film brought into a steampunk Japan. It’s faithful for the most part, and actually improves in some places by giving the whole cast – from the samurai themselves to their antagonist – distinct personalities and backgrounds.

Of those choices, I voted MiB. But thinking about it now, I really should have voted Ghostbusters.

When Samurai 7 is in the poll, why no Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex? That would get my vote. But so it gets The Real Ghostbusters.

I voted for Real Ghostbusters, although MIB was a pretty good animated series too.

For that matter, even though it's not on the poll, so was Godzilla: The Series.

The RealGhostbusters. MIB would be a distant second.

I'm going to have to go with the Real Ghostbusters. That toon was a big chunk of my childhood.

    Beetlejuice is a close second.

In terms of modern adaptations, I'd pick Tron Uprising from that list. I also enjoed the MiB series back in the day.

Also, the Samurai 7 anime is terrible. It doesn't deserve a spot on this poll.

The Real Ghostbusters. It really held its own as a series and carried over a lot of what made the movie great, even if they did redesign the characters a bit. They even tried to explain the differences between the movie and cartoon in some of the episodes.

Beetlejuice was a fun series to, but really changed itself from the movie.

*flips table* Where the fuck is Godzilla the Series? That wasn't just a good movie spinoff, it was BETTER than the movie, and actually tried to make up for it!

I picked Tron because Ghostbusters is good, but I like voting for underdogs.
