Hasbro Combiner Wars Techobots... All of them!
This was one of the first things I bought when I came back to collecting in 2017 after like a five year hiatus, and they are finally back in individual modes for the first time since they were unboxed!
Managed to find two of this brilliant blue bugger today. Not opening the second until I find a third, hopefully tomorrow, but then I’ll have all three Camera Bros sets.
I already have the UW Technobots, but I need the CW set as well. I have to have that Scrounge figure, plus the mould differences make it well worth double dipping on the set. Not to mention that the Technobots are one of my favourite teams.
The Seekers are getting ready to kill you.
Earthrise Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp for today.
All of them.
Just messin’ with Mecha Godzilla and pals today.
Jeepers Creepers Megatron
G1 Takara Broadside
This one is for all the other proud members of the SBAS*!

Hey, it is the Creeper from Jeeper Creepers!
Always thought that Megatron looked something fierce but was never able to connect the dots.
These two today...
I think these two go together pretty well.
Siege Crosshairs with Pinpointer and Cog for today.
Ok, so maybe I said I wasn't going to get anymore WfC Micromasters. Big deal. I don't tell you how to live your life, do I?
The problem is...the Battle Squad was just too intriguing (and cheap) for me not to pick up.
So, by the time the Micromaster Combiners came round I was long gone. I'd started high school and was far too self-conscious to still be buying Transformers. And, as these guys didn't get a look in the Marvel comics, I don't think I even knew that these micro combiners existed.
If I think really, really hard the first time I knew of the existence of the micro combiner would have been at the very start of my adult G1 collecting journey, when I started buying cheap 'lots' from ebay. I'm pretty sure Half-Tread was the micro in question. I seem to remember squinting at it and thinking "that doesn't make sense". A few minutes on Tfwiki and I understood. And could write a useful ebay listing.
The idea of the micro combiner isn't an awful one. It does give one a little more bang for the proverbial buck and provides the option for some interesting alt mode. BUT if you lose half of a unit, you are left with a diddy little Micromaster with a senseless alt mode. Not bad if you like that sort of thing.
I do think the Battle Squad are one of the more interesting teams, but I'm not sure they're the most interesting duo on the team (that would be Fireshot and Vanquish), but I'd concede they're the duo that lends themselves best to a retool. So many of these micro duos are comprised of a 'truck' front half and a generic backside (!) with an attachment on the top.
Ok, so one of the things that caught my eye about this team was the colours. Teal with a hot pink cannon? Sold! Sure, the combined vehicle mode is kinda goofy, but it's thoroughly charming. It's almost like a cartoon of the real vehicle. And I mean that in a complimentary way. The essence of the cannon transport has been distilled into a very simple form. It's cool.
I want to like the two bot modes, but they're a little misshapen. Direct-Hit is both kinda leggy and rather short armed. The colours still work beautifully, with a classic Decepticon purple on his chest and an eye-catching dash of orange on his face. But none of that can distract from how bad the proportions are. Power Punch is both blander and messier. He's as leggy as his partner but with the added indignity that his calves make no sense. I can fit the tip of my pinky in the space between his thigh and calves. And in profile he looks absurd. His lower half is nearly twice as deep as his upper half.
With some of the other WfC Micromaster my observation was that, in thier alt modes, they were actually less detailed, interesting or realistic than the originals (The Battle Patrol in particular). That can't be said for the Battle Squad.
As much as I enjoyed the simplicity of the G1 duo, the combined mode for the Sieg update is kinda luscious in its detail. We get a fantastically detailed little vehicle with some very luxurious paint apps. The original, cannon and wheels aside, was just one base colour with a dash of white on the windows. With the update, we get silver windows, navy highlights, and whole honking black and gunmetal grey section behind the cab. And on the molding side, we get roof lamps, vents, a set of guns that weren't on the original, and a wealth of other greebling.
And, as I'd hoped when the early Seige Micro came out, modern engineering has actually benefited the robot modes. I wondered if my memory was playing tricks on me here. So I went and got both the Siege Battle and Race Car Patrols and reminded myself what was so frustrating about them. Limbs popped off the ball joint every time I moved them, the articulation was almost there but often stopped just short.
With Power Punch all the limbs stay tightly attached to their ball joints. the ball joint on his knee gives him omnidirectional articulation, allowing for a greater range of poses, and he can fling his arms back, as if waiting for a loving embrace (Flak's the only other micro that comes close to being able to hug him back).
And he's beautifully detailed. Sure, the orange on his face isn't quite so vibrant, but the nice wash brings out the detail of a very handsome headsculpt. Maybe I'd have liked it a little more if he'd had a purple chest like the old boy, but there's no denying that the black chest with purple detailing (and an actual 'con insignia) is a strong look.
Direct-Hit isn't nearly as good. His articulation is much more limited and his face sculpt is bland to the point of almost being non-existent. BUT he's not bad. I think he's superior to most of those other Siege wave 1 micros. And he has none of the proportion issues that blighted the G1 version.
So these guys being good is...kinda disturbing for me. I (or at least my bank account) felt a little smug that I could just skip all the micros. Now I'm hesitating. The Astro Squad looks incredibly tempting to me (as an aside, I love how the Battle Squad and Astro Squad's alt modes echo those of Doubledealer and Sky Lynx respectively. Who doesn't love a 'mini-me'). I took a second look at the image for Earthrise Hot Rod, Military, and Race Track Patrols and I think my curiosity is going to be limited to the 'Squads'. I can barely believe I'm saying this, after expressing such strong opinions before, but I'm looking to whatever the next spin on the WfC Micromaster concept will be.
Things are about to get brutal...
