So, I thought I knew Red Alert from my youth. I remember the scene in 'Legacy of Unicron' where Inferno saves him by throwing him through the window of the shuttle.
Yeah, you're probably way ahead of me here. That was Smokescreen. I know what happened. My mind's eye confuses the cover of TF:UK 251 with a scene from 100 issues earlier where Smokescreen pilots the shuttle with grim determination while Rodimus looks on concerned.
So where the fuck was Red Alert in my precious UK comics? The whole paranoid security director is such a great hook that it feels weird that Furman didn't go near the character (you know, apart from that utterly weird, anachronistic appearance in 'The Enemy Within'). Maybe it was Budiansky's fault for not introducing Red Alert (and Inferno) along with the rest of the '85 cars in 'Rock'n'Roll Out'.
That probably plays into why I always saw Red Alert as a very lame repaint of Sideswipe. That and a 'Fire Chief' sportscar is a hard sell for me. And it's not just because he's a plain white rather than Sideswipe's sexy red. I mean, Prowl is arguably cooler than Bluestreak or Smokescreen because he's a badass Police car. You can easily imagine him engaged in high speed pursuit. Not so much the fire service lambo.
And even when I look at it with some sort of adult objectivity I still feel like Red Alert is a bit lame. It's like the deco emphasises all the clunkier bits of the mold. Where Sideswipe looks sleek, Red Alert looks chunky, and it really is nothing more than a little optical illusion. Cool light bar though!
So why is Siege Red Alert such a stud? Like, he has no right to be so gosh darn handsome!
I really wasn't expecting much of this figure, to be honest. The 'obligatory' repaint of a more interesting figure, forever destined to be stood behind everyone else, whether that's just on the shelf or in some group shot. But I get this guy out of the packaging and there's just...something about him. Maybe it's the little red 'domino mask' effect around his eyes, which contrasts so beautifully with those those sky blue eyes. He's dreamy.
Giving this guy a new head sculpt is a very welcome choice. I say new. As far as my little eyes can see, it's just a change to the 'ears' of the helmet. But it's enough. The more that can be done to distinguish these mold shares the better, but I'll welcome a subtle variation.
The super pristine white contrasts nice with Sideswipe's slightly faded shades and makes Red Alert fit in beautifully with his other Siege 'rescue patrol' colleagues, Prowl, And Ratchet. Speaking of which, I love the addition of Prowl's light bar. I mean, you'd have been mad not to give Red one of these, but it's a bit of budget stretching that I thoroughly approve of, in that it's subtle, required of the figure
So what are the downsides? Well, while Sideswipe looks as smooth as can be in alt mode, Red Alert looks a lot...messier. I mean, it's really just the sides, but boy...they are a panel-y, kinda incoherent mess. Also, the red 'stripe' effect really doesn't work and those red hubcaps? I ck! I can see what they were going for. It's a lot of white to break up. But man, it seems like they panicked. That said, the moody black windscreen is rather dashing.
The other thing that bugs me is...NO SHOULDER CANNON. For me it's a detail as essential as that lightbar, and it's omission is glaring and irritating! It's not even like the gun he comes with is all that great or suitable, though I do like the fact you can combine it with the lightbar to create a fireman's axe (though, you know, I'd have just preferred an axe).
This is the first 'main line' Siege repaint I've picked up, and I like the way they're going with it. It's a lot of fun and, minor quibbles aside, I've enjoyed how much care and attention to detail they've out into it. I think, like many of us, I'm still a bit wary of repaints from the Combiner Wars era, and the Voyagers in Titans Return - if I'm being fair. But I should get over this. Hasbro have been pretty good with the repaint/retool/shared engineering in the last few lines.
Now bring on the rest of the Seekers!
