Siege Shivawave today. I love damn near everything about him from the core robot actually pulling off a respectable gun mode to the light piping on the battleship bridge. I just wish that he had forward ankle movement. 898A4CDA-1797-4E83-8946-4336CF811D11.jpeg 945B09F7-BFB4-40AF-B739-354697A7FF13.jpeg D4209E22-3D9B-4143-8C9A-A84DCA3AB68E.jpeg

This ship mode seriously reminds me of a transforming battleship robot toy that I used to have. I wish I knew what toyline it was from. A curse on my shotholed memory! ;)  49188DC0-295E-4A96-86C9-C9982C253AD3.jpeg

    Sexy boyz!

I feel like a proper filth bag saying it, but Siege Sideswipe really does look so much better than MP Sideswipe.

    G1 lad's no bad though.

Fortress Maximus' insoles are getting a Generations update? Get outta here!

So I went on, at length, about Fortress Maximus but I didn't really talk about Cog. And that was because I always thought he was kind of pointless.

Fort Max improved on just about everything Metroplex did apart from the bonus figures. Sixgun was weird but actually quite a lot of fun to play with, and integrated so nicely in Metroplex's city mode. Cog isn't nearly as good. Sure, it's nice to have some wheeled toys to pootle around the city mode, but even Scamper does this better. To be fair, one thing that Cog does well is provide the two little transports for yer Nebulons. But beyond that all Cog/Gasket/Grommet do is fill out Max's feet in 'bot mode.

Cog is a very weak robot. there's a metal bar over his head, which just makes him look so cheap, and his features feel so ill defined. It's almost as if the mold for him was shallow and lacking sharp definition. He's just such an awkward looking soul.

The vehicle modes are just as janky. The idea that they might somehow be more substantial if you gave each of them names is beautifully optimistic. Grommet is the worst of the two, being just some shapes with tank tread stickers on them. Gasket at least has a mild element of transformation, with the arms being removed and put reattached as cannons. Still a bit wack, though!

So a weird candidate for the, very in demand, Generations Deluxe redo, right? Enter the 'weaponiser' concept. It's one of those peculiar concepts that lends itself to the Transformers franchise, like Headmasters and Targetmasters. I can almost imagine the conversation in the design room. "So the next theme is war. What do we need in war? More weapons! Let's have a 'bot that turns into a bunch of weapons that all the others can use".

    But does it work?

Yes. Yes, it really does. Cog is an incredibly well sculpted and detailed looking bot. Imposing even. It almost feels like he's an apology for the vague looking freebie that came with Fort Max over thirty years earlier. Absolutely nothing about him looks cheap or lazy. Someone was out to prove a point. This was a toy that had to work well in every mode if they were going to sell the concept.

The vehicle modes are as good as they could possibly be, whilst still being based on the originals. All the detail in the sculpting, the massive cannons, the silver paint, and the mere fact that the head folds away makes Gasket a pretty neat little Cybertronian vehicle. Grommet is still the worse of the two, but even he actually looks like a tank now.

And then he falls apart to pieces and becomes a bunch of weapons that his comrades wear. War makes monsters of us all.

This is super inventive, and the engineering solutions are really excellent. There's no way this should work as well as it does. No element of Cog is wasted, as he comes a shield, a backpack mounted pair of cannons and...platforms shoes. Well, I suppose if you're firing massive back mounted cannons you'd want to be taller than your comrades. It's worth noting that none of this looks like whichever figure wearing the weaponiser system has a a bunch of robot arms and legs hanging off them. Each individual transformation works well enough to disguise that fact that it's an arm, leg, torso or....crotch.

But do I like it? Oddly, I don't. I respect it. Very much so. But I just can't bring myself to find much pleasure in it. I can totally see why other people are enjoying this so much; the whole things lends itself to customistaion and dramatic posing, and I can really see how the actual target market for these toys (that's kids) would have such a blast with this. But I guess I've just never been too bothered by 'power up' armour. I always found it a bit cringey whenever I saw 'God Ginrai' with those big platform shoes.

Yeah, hold on. Why does Cog always wind up on people's feet? Poor sod!

This guy scratches the Voyager Megatron itch much better than Classics Megs, IMHO.

    Battlemasters Force 6!

    IMG_5783.JPG

Battlemasters... because they wield (and/or are) the mighty wave 1 Siege Battlemaster weapons/weapon users!

Force... because they are a force to be reckoned with!

6... because there are six of them in the squad!

(They are all assassins as well)
